Just bought a '99 mustang convertible for my daughter, makes a noise when you first press the up button to raise the top, lasts about a second and a half, sounds like a grinding gear, drivers side.

Operates normally otherwise, lowers quietly.

Any experience? Theories? Online resources?

Thanks!

Most likely it is in the moter gear assembly but in this case I would do nothing untill it stops working. The repair cost will be the same now as later and because getting in down is no problem why spend money on it now. Who knows it may continue to work even though next summer. You might check the hydro fluid if it has it.

In many powered models it is the motor taking the slack out before it engages. Let it run till it dies.
