I was reading QC's thread about the familys beagle buddy probs and I did'nt want to get on my soap box there...

So I'm gonna do it here.......(appologies and best wishes to QC.. no jab intended at ya here)

Why in the he-double hockeysticks do people insist on going to "breeders" for pure breed dogs as family pets, when there are adoption facilities (THE POUND) full to the top with dogs (some prue breed, some mutts) that need a good home?......

Is it a socio-status thing?..... Are you not  if you adopted a mutt from the pound?... Please esplain it to me, because i'm at a loss...

<as snap heads back to his dog house, feeling like Andy Rooney, shaking his head, drooling, and muttering incohearently about adopting a mutt.......

Re: Mutts..

One of mine is a registered Weimeriner and the other one is a rescued Lab/Ridgy/??? mix. Both are good dogs, but the Weim is a basket case when we're not home. I think the other one is just glad to be here.

Re: Mutts..

No offense Snap. We got one from the pound once and feel pretty lucky. I would go again and maybe we should've, but like I said I fell in love with Beagles on my Australia trips and was looking for one. This little guy may get me back thinkin' that way though.

Also, another point to remember is good breeders (not these last idiots) are supposed to follow traits that include behavior. A trustworthy breeder, with the right breed, can make getting the dog you're looking for an easy chore. The examples I am thinking of are Labs and Springers. I know Springers from a hunting friend, and if you want one that is bred for the purpose then there are some great breeders that have a good history. Likewise for Labs, whether you're looking for hunters or family dogs, there are lines and breeders known for either. My .02.

BTW, my wife will adopt a dog and then find the right home for him/her at the drop of a hat. The family across the street has a Lab we found, but we don't do black ones anymore or we would've kept him. They shed like you have no idea and our dogs live in the house with us. Black ones on light carpet simply don't work for her. My boys bring home strays pretty often too and we find homes or the owners and that's the deal. The fact is I saw this latest lady's truck and adds at Costco one day and had her number. We went and looked and thought we were the right family to take one of the older ones. I guess you could say we have potentially rescued this one too . . . Jury is still out, but you guys have helped a lot for "Boo" . . . ;)

Re: Mutts..

I've had a lot of dogs in my life, most of them died of old age.
They've always been part of my family.
I've spent a lot of money on pure-breds and have had some incredible and beautiful animals. Most of these were Airedales.

The smartest dogs I've ever had were mixed breeds and out of these the most loyal were pound dogs.

I've always picked the dog that picks me. They've always proven to be very social and one that will do anything for attention.

Re: Mutts..

Dog's have been a part of my life since the day I was born and they just aren't "pets" to me.
I suspect 90% of the population would be fine with an adopted "pound" dog but there is that small percent that knows what they want.
Every shopping mall should have to give up a spot in their property for the local pound if there is a commercialized pet store selling dogs.

Back in my 20's when I was on the kick of having the purebreed. The vet got to know me on a first name basis. Its been mutts for me since. My last is a newfy/lab mix. We drove up into northern Michigan to a rescue shelter. The pup ran straight to me and busted my lip first thing. We've had him for 4 years now. Very protective of the family members and is a good deturant for would be thieves. Thanks to petfinder, we have a wonderful pooch.

Re: Mutts..

i have 2 pure-bred labs. one of them from a breeder and the other was found wandering the neighborhood (has to be pure bred but not certain). we got the stray first and wanted to get a second lab, yellow this time. we also wanted to get a young puppy and let the older one 'train' the younger.

that's the first pure bred i've had, all the rest were strays, hand me downs, or pound pups.

the pure bred had a few issues including needing knee surgery at a young age. the strays and pound pups have been mostly problem free, lots cheaper. sometimes you want something more specific than what they have though.

I like a certain breed of dog. Yes there are some pure bred animals at the pound and humane society, but you never really know what you are going to get. Most of the time the animal ends up being for adoption due to behavior problems induced by the previous owner's ignorance or stupidity.

When I decide to spend up to 15 years with a large dog that will share my home, I want to mold that dog into exactly what I want it to be. That means raising it from a pup.

Is it a socio-status thing?..... Are you not  if you adopted a mutt from the pound?... Please esplain it to me, because i'm at a loss...

No, I just know what I want.

I got mine from the shelter and would do it again when i am ready

But at least here the puppy thing is strange as North Shore Animal Leage inports them from all over the place and the local older dogs end up getting put down because everybody wants a puppy

They have so many you gotta wonder what kind of mill is turning out such and endless supply of mutt puppys

....and you want papers to prove this is a real pet...not a phony one?

You wouldn't be the first. My sister and brother-in-law preferred buying their pug only from a registered breeder...hmmm. They didn't say it...but for them (unfortunately) there is very little conversation panache' saying that you bought (or heavens forbid 'got') your dog from a local pound.
If I get a dog....he'll be carefully chosen...but from a pound, not a 'breeder'.

I actually brag about finding our first Lab at the pound, so definitely not a status thing.

Hehe. I've always had mutts except for this one time. My wife and I had never owned a purebred anything. So we paid like $250 for a black lab. BEAUTIFUL dog and great with kids and smart as a whip.

HOWEVER, she chewed on EVERYTHING. She chewed the wooden corners off the HOUSE. The corners off the wooden STEPS, chewed on the door facings on the patio doors. HECK, she chewed on the wooden stumps in the yard.

We tried all kinds of different "remedies" - Sprays, spices, vinegars, chew toys, chew toys with peanut butter, even wooden sticks (those worked ok). This dog had a wood fet-ish I swear! We gave her away after a year to a fireman and his family. He talked about training her to be a fire dog of some sort. Don't know if he actually did it tho. Pretty funny to pay $250 for a dog that eats wood I'll tell ya....

The second reason we gave her away was, our kids wouldn't play with her. They were small at the time and she got big fast. My daughter (8) is still scared of dogs - even poodles :D

Re: Mutts..

Couldn't care less about the papers. The AKC is a bunch of hooey to German Shepherds anyway. They seem to think the standard for a GSD should be a sloped back knuckle dragger that couldn't work for more than five minutes without needing a break.

Like I mentioned before, I wanted to raise him from a puppy. I wanted a specific breed. Didn't get him from a puppy mill that provides pups for the mall stores. Did my research.

By the way, we have a small rescue dog as well.

Re: Mutts..

Dogs are kewl.. does it really matter where you get them. I own two minpins purebreds, but BOTH are adopted. As for the lure of the purebred over a mutt, don't axe me man... I love dogs. All dogs are kewl, including viscious pit bulls trained by vic and crew. They can't help but be subjected to what humans subject them to.
The only question is why do some people abuse each other and their animals too?

Re: Mutts..

I don't think that "true" breeders are the problem. There are alot of folks that see dollar signs. Backyard breeders that don't give a darn. Here in SD we have to deal with Mexican "puppy mills". Always smuggling them in and selling them anywhere they can, including street corners and swap meets.
"Shopping mall" puppies stores should have a 10 day background check like buying a gun.
There are kids here that stroll through the mall with rotty's and pits, they live with mom in an apt. etcc... Just want to smack the lil punks... Their dog is more like their fashion accessory...

Isn't it funny how they pick you.

Waffle i can under stand where your coming from about the purebred thing.
Myself Ive had purebreads and hinds 57s. Iv ed always found purebreads to be more expensive to keep. Like shepherds have a history of hip problems but are a great dog to protect your family. My present dog is a ****zue/podle
cross and is about the most lovable dog Ive ever had.My last dog was a Blue/Red Healer cross would protect any one in my family to the death if it had to with out question and it tryed to prove that many times. This dog was a no bull ****e dog.The problem with my Healer was i had to watch him at all times. I miss that dog we had to put him down at the age of 14.

My neighbor has a black lab who is a mulch machine. He goes around the yard and gets any type of branches, twigs, palm leaves, huge logs, whatever woody thing he can find and proceeds to chew it to tiny bits. He actually does a pretty good job of mulching the back yard as well as maintaining the landscaping by pulling any dead material out of the plants.

Re: Mutts..

We got our dog from a no kill shelter. They bascially keep them till they get adopted. She's a husky/german sheperd mix, pure white. Absolutely gorgeous dog and we get lots of comments. the pound takes care of the spay/neuter, spends time training, she was already housebroken, has yet to have an accident in the house and is one of the best dogs I've ever had. I would get another in a heartbeat. My last dog was a purebred lab from a breeder, problem "child" from day one. He ended up getting out of his pen and we never saw him again. He would get out of his pen on a daily basis and I still to this day don't know how he got out when he disappeared.
We took the mutt to the lake yesterday, without the boat just to see how she would act around boats and such. She was ready to go with whoever would take her, it was funny. She decided to go swimming but misjudged how deep the water was and stepped off the dock thinking it was shallow I guess. Did a butt over head flip into the water. The " oh crap" look on her face was priceless. I could hardly get her out of the water I was laughing so hard.
Pound puppy or purebred, to each his own I guess, but shelter dogs for me from now on.
