Hi...

This is one of the reasons I enjoy working on the older motors. There's always a surprise.

This latest one; a 6 HP 6604A ('76 6 HP) used to be a rental motor. When i was working over the carb I realized that it was different from others in that it had a High Speed Needle kit installed.

I'm curious....how common was it for dealers or customers to install this modification? Were there common reasons for doing so?

Below you can see the two versions. The OMC part number for the kit is 0381154

On some of the smaller mtr's OMC found out that the fixed jet didn't work for all the smaller mtr's. Therefore they came out with the adjustables. They also had these for other models.

What I have found doing research for my "Ramblings" for that size a motor is that prior to about 1970 the carbs had a adjustable mainjet. So my guess is that since it came from a rental outfit, the carb may have been changed off a older canabilized motor over the timespan it was in use.

But; this is not the setup where there are two of the full size needles that exit through the front cowl. This is a compact modified bowl plug.....with a small needle that can only be adjusted with a small screw-driver.
The "kit" is still sold today under OMC part number 381154.
