My 1977 35 hp Evinrude lower unit

Hi, is there anyone out there that could help me. I had a clunking noise in my lower unit after I spun my hub, I fixed the prop and it continuid to make the noise . I found out it is either my clutch or foward gear or both the other nite, I am a preetty good mechanic, but I heard you need to shimm , and that you need special tools to replce these parts give me any ideas ,, please, I'm a budgeted fisherman

Get a shop manual and parts list. You will then have an idea of what the fix will cost and how difficult it will be also.<br /><br />Usually, if the clutch dog needs replacing, so does at least the forward gear. The cause of failure is usually poor shifting technique (shifting should be done briskly), too high an idle, or improperly adjusted linkage, cables, etc.
