I have a 1982 20ft Grady White with a 1982 175hp Johnson 25 inch shaft that is original to the boat and has never been rebuilt. I have owned the boat for a year and the guy I bought it from said there was water in one of the cylinders and the compression was low in that cylinder. It usally takes about 10 minutes to her cranked up. I think I am choking and priming correctly. I am using Johnson Oil as recommended. I have two questions 1. Is there anything that I can do to make starting more reliable? 2. How long do these engines run before they need a major overhaul?? I do not want to spend any more money on this old engine. One more question, a friend has a 1994 200hp Suzuki Fuel Injected engine with 200 hours he wants $3000 for it. I do not know much about Suzuki. Should I have any reservations about buying this?? Sorry so many question. Thanks

The Johnson sounds like it is going to need some work (and 10 minutes is a LONG time to start an engine).

I can't speak to the price on the Suzuki, but they have a decent reputation -- parts not as easily available as a Yamaha, I'm sure. Quiz your friend on his experiences, and ask for (or at least discuss) the motor's repair history. What kind of problems has he had? Why is he selling, and what is he buying to replace it?

Hi, Maybe a blown head gasket letting the water leak in.This may be the cause of the low comression.Sure cheaper to change then a whole new engine.
