My 280 ocasionaly kicks up inreverse. When first purchased. Drive would never lock in reverse. After 3 years I installec new pawls new inner spring and outer springs of the locking mechanism, also new water tube, new actuator, sleeve and nut. Adjusted by mechanic and also inspected and confirmed by other mechanic. The drive now locks but ocasionaly slips and kicks up. Sometimes when engaed into reverse it locks with bang noise and sometimes bangs and slips. Most of the time it shifts quietly with no bang noise.bang meaning u feel thrust pulling up drive and then either locked bang or slip bang. Weird I cannot figure out. Someelse on this forum had problem and resolved it by tighten nut at shift cable. They did it while boat was in water. Could that be my problem or something else. How do I do it. Any help would be apreciated.

The shift and latch have nothing to do with each other on a 280. A 280 only unlatches when you raise it. The raise/lower motor assembly is part of the picture. Has that been checked yet?

My tilt motor did the same. Had it rebuilt, and it still didn't raise without assistance. $250 later, the new motor raised the drive normally. I am wondering if the threaded rod/plunger inside the tilt is damaged.
