My 40 1990 John runs cold?

I have been doing alot of searching about my black mudd problem? It seems that I have more than most are explaining? One thread said that a cold running engine will make this worse.....I can comfortably put my hand on the head after 15 minutes of running. The tell tale water barely gets warm? Thermostat bad? Please help my driveway looks like the tanker Valdees crashed!! My engine also runs very sluggish on the hose? Idles like DooDoo...I am hopeing that all of these things add up to something common? Ringing any bells! As always thanks in advance!

First thing I would replace is the T/stat assy.

tstat. you suold be able to hold you hand on the block for 3-4 seconds before it get uncomfortable. very possibly part of your problem. then i would do a decarb.
