Hey guys,

So I have never owned a boat and I was online at 11:30 at night and a listing was just listed for this 98 sting ray 190LS. Listed price was $100 I called and it was a wife upset with her husband and his "Projects" so went up and picked it up that night. Title for Trailer and boat in hand for $100 bucks..

Bad news-
Outdrive was stolen
Nasty carpet
Bad upholstry
Motor Was taken apart and in pieces (all there)

Good news is I build race cars for a living so motor will be easy and cheap.

Anyways here is what she looked like when I first got her-

Re: My 98 string ray boat restore

This weekend was our first week end of really giving it a go.
Pulled the motor out last week and took it down to the machine shop. Just got it back as you will see in the pictures. We pulled the carpet out and cleaned all the old glue off. The wood was actually in really good shape with no soft spots so we sanded it down just a little and put the new glue and carpet down. This was our first time doing carpet so I think it turned out really well!

Re: My 98 string ray boat restore

Hey guys,

Thanks! The boat is coming along well. When we pulled out the carpet the wood was in good condition. I was thinking It would need replaced but it check out alright. The boat was stored without a cover but it was on a hill with the plug pulled so I guess I lucked out. I am hoping I can drop the motor in on Sunday. I will have more pictures when I put everything else on. I also have some hull work to do. I will post some pictures of that also.

I love the little oil slinger in the oil valley. I have never seen one of those.

That's a good question. I didn't do much on the transom. I got a rebuild kit with gimbal seals and bearing. What should I check for other then that? The fiberglass is solid around the transom.

Fiberglass is always solid. You have to drill and get samples of wood and make sure they are dry.

Re: My 98 Stingray boat restore

From the inside of the boat, drill 1/4" holes into the transom down low at various places, but NOT all the way through, Only about 1" deep. Check your shavings if they are light tan and dry GREAT!!! Fill the holes with 3M 5200 Sealant and call it good. If Dark Brown and Wet then you will need to replace the transom. You need to core sample the motor mounts and stringers too.

Re: My 98 Stingray boat restore

I think we may be getting a bit carried away here guys. Why go looking for trouble? If it's solid, it's solid. He's already got the deck carpeted and everything. As for the transom, since nearly everything is stripped out anyway, perhaps you could remove the drive's transom assembly and check the condition of the wood around the outdrive hole. If it's in good shape, you can take the opportunity to coats the hole sides with some kind of sealer to help keep it that way.
