#1 Never wear flip flops while removing or installing your outdrive
#2 Don't get in a hurry
#3 Make sure you have actually tightened down all of the nuts and bolts on your lower unit.
I started the day out putting my drive back together while the wife cleaned the boat. I was having a hard time trying to get the upper and lower unit back together by myself, but I finally did it I thought. Then I got everything ready to mount the drive on the boat. After several unsuccesful attempts my wife finally helped out and we got it on and bolted up. I decided to see if everything worked right. Forward gear - check, neutral - check, reverse - no luck. Then I figured it out, while mating the upper and lower I got the shift shaft on worng when putting the drive together. Back off came the drive and lets take it apart again. This time my wife decided to help out and we got it back together using a bungee cord to hold the prop shaft in gear.
This is were I made my mistake. I had to run inside real quick and attend to a fight between my oldest and middle daughters. When I got back outside I had forgot to bolt the units together. I picked both units up and begin to move towards the boat. Then it happened, the lower unit seperated from the upper unit and came crashing down on my right toes. I immediately laid the upper unit down, grabbed a towel that was near by and hobbled to the bathroom, all the while asking my wife why she did not remind me to bolt it togehter. By this time my wife, my mother, and my grandmother come crashing into the house. Apparently my mother and grandmother had decided to come over and see the kids. Here I am in the bathtub trying to rinse the blood of my foot so I can see the damage and I have three hens being hysterical about the situation. After the dust settles I have a small gash on the side of my big toe, two gashes in the side on my second toe, one gash on the other side of my second toe, and a small cut on the top of my middle toe.
Doesn't look like I will need stitches, but it will be sore and bruised for awhile. The only reason why I felt like sharing my bone head moment with everyone is to hopefully make everyone stop and think about what they are doing. I was lucky to not cut off one of my toes. All of this could of been helped if I had taken my time & thought things through, and actually of worn boots instead of my damn flip flops. Nothing is more important than your health. I appoliigize for the bad grammar, the wife is trying to keep me doped up with some pain killers.
