Tom did you ever think of getting a primer for it? Ask your dealer if he has one. I had to get one for a similar problem with my old kicker. All it is a fuel bulb inline so all you do is pump it up by hand like the old style primers and then pull to start on the first or second try. Sure beets the he?? out of your exercises program if you ask me:cool:
I think 20-25 times is WAY TOO much execise for ONE arm to handle any day or night.

Sounds like the choke is not working. Check the linkages and be sure it closes completely when engaged.

Take it into a dealer and have them determine whether you have an engine or operator malfunction.

Yep. Time for a good diagnosis. As Elvin mentioned, could be either an engine or operator issue. If it was once working OK, and you haven't changed your technique, it could be something like a disconnected choke linkage.

On the other hand, I have a customer with the same motor (but in RC configuration) who forgot about the "push to choke" feature of the key switch. He asked why the motor was harder to cold start in cooler weather. Turns out he was cranking away with no choke at all. Just one of those memory things.

Re: my arm is killing me

thanks again for all your input. bought motor new in 03. always performed as it should. use stabill religously. take carb apart including emulsion tube and give it a good soak as needed. about 4 times. i know procedure to fire this motor. never rebuilt carb and only use motor to troll. once again any ideas? fuel bulb pumps up as it should. problem started near end of last season and is continueing after thorough carb cleaning thanks, tom

Desire to effect self repair does not equal ability...

I posted: Lack of ability may effect desire to learn

No need to be defensive pajet....it was a compliment....meaning you may not know how to fix it, but you can be taught, or learn how. Nobody is born with this knowledge everyone has to learn it.

Ok.....what have you done to troubleshoot the problem besides clean the carb? When were the plugs last changed? Have you looked at the choke linkage as suggested?

Re: my arm is killing me

You need to take the engine into a dealer...If it takes 25 pulls to start an engine, something is wrong. It may be as simple as you not knowing how to correctly start the engine or it might be as unusual as a compression loss. Or, I will be happy to baby step you through every possible cause one step at a time. If you want to do it that that way:

1) Check for fire
2) Check for compression
3) Check your lower unit oil for metal fragments.

Then report back here.

PS At some point in this "help" you are going to need the factory service manual for test procedures and values, so if you don't have one, put one on order from a dealer.

Re: my arm is killing me

This may constitute a semi-hijacking of this thread, but I'd like to ask Elvin and Paul is this really is a bit of a design defect on the Tohatsu 4 strokes?

The reason I say that, is that (as you guys might recall) I've got both a 9.9 4 stroke Merc Bigfoot and a 20HP Tohatsu 4 stroke. Very similar engines, both powerheads built by Tohatsu. But in addition to the blasted "twist-to-shift" throttle/gearshift that I can't stand Merc also puts a primer bulb on their engines. I think it shoots gas directly into the carb?

Fortunately, both my motors are electric start, but the Tohatsu definitely tanks a lot more cranking after being run dry - maybe 30 seconds or more. That's even after pumping the primer bulb in the fuel line to the point where it is rock hard. The Bigfoot also isn't real happy about cold/dry starts, but it definitely doesn't take as many seconds of cranking.

Just my observation,

-dm

Re: my arm is killing me

final post. changed plugs and fuelfilter. one plug had a hairline crack in the insulator. fuel filter seemed clear. fired on first pull and ran as it should. thanks
