Hey all,

Well about ready to make my first boat purchase, figured I'd let you guys see what I'm getting into and then here what you all think of the details of this....

This boat is a 1993, 1993 Chris-Craft Crowne 282, single 454 motor w/900 hours on her, Stern Drive, 4 blade SST Prop. The hull looks very very clean. the planer boards and out drive looks clean as well...out drive has a coat of paint on it....the boat comes with Fish Finder, Compass, VHF Radio, Cockpit Ice Maker, Stove, Refrigerator, Microwave, AC/Heat, Bottom Paint, Trim Tabs, Stereo.

The interior is in very good shape. I have NOT heard to motor run yet, were going on the sea trail run soon. But the motor does look clean. OMC cobra.

Things I'v noticed wrong with it SO FAR:...
underneath swim plateform, around the edges, there's some water sepage in the back of the platform away from the boat...(this is a fiberglass top with wood contruction underneath), no wood root there but looks like it needs some caulk and paint....swim plateform wraps around the sides and sticks out a few inches from the side wall of the boat, and under that there is wood root not much but it's there....I guess I could scrap it out and fill it back with something, some kind a filler, marine grade something...need help on that one..lol....and then caulk and paint...

tha control panel, paint is peeling some, so I guess I could take the instruments of the panel and repaint that....then reinstall those...

fish finder bracket is broken...

Then one vent window needs some atention...has troble shoutinig...have to ask the sales guy that one.....

There going to replace the cockpit cover and Bimini top with new ones....The plastic covers need to be replaced....

So all and all....it needs some TLC...but any boat that age is going to....

This boat for my family is going to be used as a crusie type thing not go out far and not go fast but have fun getting around, some fishing and sleeping over night on her....maybe some poker runs and such...and just enjoying getting into pleasure boating....

13,999.00....what's you all think??.....

Thanks,
RED

Re: My boat purchase, questions....

Are you aware that OMC went out of business a number of years ago and that Cobra stern drives are no longer fully supported with parts/service? There are lots of them still around and I don't believe there's anything particularly bad about the drives but it's something to consider.

I'm not the type to throw around the "get a survey" recommendation to everyone but in this case it sounds like it could be a very wise investment.

With a 454 that is probably a King Cobra outdrive. You need to verify what it is. Those were good drives but they were only produced for a couple of years. Service and support is even harder on those than the regular Cobras.

Good advice on the OMC outdrive. Make sure you get all the info on that before you make a decision. It could cost you half the price of the boat to have it repaired or replaced.

ANY sign of rot needs to be carefully checked by an expert. Many times there will be rot you can't see because of water intrusion. Poor swim platform installation is a big contributer to rotton transoms. If you can see rot around the fasteners, it is pretty much garaunteed to be much worse than you can see.

Make sure at a minimum you have a compression test done on the engine. And if they can't document the last time the manifolds and risers were replaced, budget around $1000 for replacement (make sure you can even get them for an OMC).

Hopefully your boating budget realizes that a boat that size you'll be getting about 1 MPG at best.

Re: My boat purchase, questions....

It says king cobra on the motor, "OMC KING COBRA" 454
I did put a question into the salesman about parts, he also offered to do a compression test on it. So I will be doing that....I'll see if I can get anymore history on it as you suggested....thanks for all your advice ...

The root is nowhere near the boat transum, it's at the very edge of the swim plateform...kind of where the wood meets the fiberglass edging....just seams the water got into it and expanded the wood a little....looks like I can caulk it and then paint...but the swim PF has trim that goe around the sides and sticks out about 3 inches from the side of the boat...that's where the wood is somewhat rooted....only on the outside of the boat....I will be looking into that further....I will have a survey done for sure....

Yeah the newer boats don't even use wood on there plateforms...like on the searays...just fiberglass molded form....much better idea....

Thanks all,
