My brother-in-law bought a boat last year and someone had smeared some kind of nasty stain/varnish crap on his teak floor storage cover. You couldn't even walk on the stupid thing because it stuck to your feet! YUK! We bought our boat this last winter and someone had used some varnish on the teak cover in it too! ARGH! At least it wasn't sticky....just looked like hell. I had to take it all apart and sand that junk off and then oil it down with some nice teak oil. Man it looks sweet now!! :) I just don't understand why anyone would put varnish or anything like that on teak. It's the most gorgeous wood on the planet if you ask me....why would anyone cover it up with stain/varnish!! Sorry, just venting here, but this just seems crazy to me.

Here's another one....looked at a boat today where some mental giant had painted the teak swim platform with what looked to be International Harvester farm tractor red paint. Looks liked he used a toilet bowl brush to do it, and managed to drip it all over the trim tabs and outdrive.  Unbelieveable..........

I don't use teak oil anymore, looks good for a short period but does not last, requiring recleaning and oiling. I have started using a clear wood sealer. None of the issues you talk about and has most of the look of of oiled teak, but maintains its good looks a lot longer.

Painted Over Teak!!??? Should be a law against it!!!! <br /><br />I'll never use anything except good old teak oil on my stuff. It lasts very well if you ask me....At least a whole season. I don't have enough wood on my boat to worry about it. Only takes about 5 minutes to redo it so it's no big deal. :D

Dragracer, Have you ever seen teak with about 10 coats of varnish on it? if you have the time, varnish is like fine wine....... it looks better with age if you keep it up........

DragRacer:<br />I'm not a expert on wood, but last year at the Seattle boat show I was on a high end 46 footer with teak hand rails that looked so good with a depth that looked like 3 inches ... so I just had to ask! They said that each boats hand rails got 15 coats of varnish! Like teak oil, I've always used linseed oil on rifle stocks.. but the next one I refinish I'm going to try varnish (10-15 coats) and see what it looks like :) <br /><br />Link

Sounds nice guys but the yay-hoos that put that crap on mine and on my brother-in-laws wood obviously didn't know what they were doing. Mine looked like it had a very thin coat(or two) of something on it that was peeling and just generally looked like hell. I'm sure if done with the right stuff and by someone that knows what they are doing it would look VERY nice like you say. I've never been very good with that kind of stuff myself so I'll stick to the oil. I still think it looks great that way.

DragRacer ... nice boat, and a neat trick, how did you make that link?<br /><br />some twenty years ago, I found a boat that was hideously painted inside and out with housepaint .. some fuscia travesty, but a SOLID boat, so ... dirt cheap is always a good thing to me, lol, I like to work so I scrape and sand down to bare wood, and its mahogany ... naturally, I begin SCREAMING invectives, but then realized if it hadnt been painted, it would have been wayyyy outta my price league ( I made a lot back then, but that was wine women and song days, and the rest I spent foolishly!)<br /><br />Literally thousands of hours later, and a JC Whitney rebuild kit on the 327 SBC (after locating stainless steel head gaskets for the chevy, remember, Al Gore hadnt invented the internet yet)<br />I had a beautiful boat, and a few lasting impressions<br /><br />Wood SUCKS, wayyy too much work<br /><br />Inboard single screw engines SUCK, hard too control<br /><br />and you make a nickle an hour for working, despite selling the thing for 3000 1984 dollars<br /><br />lol, ah well

Re: My Bro-in-law and now me!!

Thanks Ray, it seems to be a real nice boat so far. Only had it out a half dozen or so times. Keep finding little things to fix here and there but nothing serious so far. <br /><br />About the link....I just put it in my signature using UBB code. You can click on the FAQ link above to find out how to do it. I just learned by accident that if you edit/update your profile, you have to re-enter the UBB code into your signature because it actually replaces the UBB code with HTML code. And since HTML is not allowed, the next time you save it, it takes the link out. Seems silly to me but that's the way it works. <br /><br />Cool story about the boat. :) Sounds like a s$#@load of work. Also sounds like you had a real nice boat when you got done with it. Too bad you blew it all....LOL!!! :D
