My control lever is ready to fall off??

Just getting my boat "water ready" My firdt motorboat, (I'm a sailboat guy).
This is a Silverline, 1980, with a Merc 220 V-8 and 1st gen outdrive.
The lever has 3 buttons, "down" under handle, on handle one on each side for "up"
I had it out for the first time last weekend to see how it ran, and I noticed I can pull the handle off the spline shaft.
I took the ring off the handle to see if there was a screw or??, nothing.
I was about to dive deeper into it when it started to rain and I called it.
The boat (now) is in Clayton N.Y., and I'm 320 miles away in Scranton!
I MAY be going up this weekend, (it looks like rain, so maybe not).
Can anyone help?
How is this handle held on???

don't know what kind of handle it is, there are a few different styles that used the trim button set-up you have

its probably so old you can't get parts for it, probably time for a new remote control

Either there is a bolt missing that held the control handle or look for a hole in the bottom of the handle, there should be a allen head set screw there to tighten the handle. pick Mercruiser, slide cursor all the way to the right, remote controls Boatinfo - The library, containing manuals, brochures and other technical documents from the last hundred years!

Are you sure it is coming off the splines? I had a control that pulled out from the side to get to throttle only.

Either there is a bolt missing that held the control handle or look for a hole in the bottom of the handle, there should be a allen head set screw there to tighten the handle.
