My experience with changing prop pitch.

Just thought I would share my experience with getting the right prop setup for my boat. I started with an OMC 13x12.5 on the Evinrude 40hp. The motor would easily over rev and run into the built in RPM limiter at about 5900 rpm. So I read as much as I could on this forum and others about prop pitch.

I ordered a Turning Point Hustler prop in a 15x12.25. Now the boat runs at 5000 rpm at WOT, right in the middle of the OMC manual listed WOT operating range of 4500 - 5500.

I think there was more than a 400 rpm drop, because the motor used to over rev. The Hustler prop is a CUPPED prop without any ventilation holes. The OMC was NOT cupped and had ventilation holes.

With the OMC prop, the max speed was 24 mph. With the Hustler prop the max speed is 28-29 mph at 5000 rpm. It feels like the hole-shot is actually better than before. It feels like it's "hooked up" to the water better. I can run on plane with 3 adults at 14 mph, and with the trim pin in the middle hole, it runs rather level... visibility is good.

Hope this info helps other with their prop decisions.

PS. I also ordered another prop from iBoats because they are on sale, and with the hub system, it was only $40 plus shipping to have the right backup/spare. Now, if I can find a quick disconnect for the prop nut.....

Mark42,
Interesting information on your prop swap. Always great to hear positive results from fellow boaters.

.
