Hello guys. Didnt see a welcome section so I thought I would say hi here. I currently own the Intex seahawk 4 infaltable boat for a year now and wow, I love it. For the price and quality, this boat is the best bang for my buck.

Ofcource there are better boats with more features out there from intex but they will cost more. And since I was ona budget and was looking for an upgrade to my no name 2 man boat that gets holes every other week, the seahawk 4 was a god-send.

I use to fish off the pier until I picked up the boat and now I bought crab cages to go crabbing as well. With 2 cages and 2 rods, me and 1 friend have a hell of a time on a sunny afternoon floating around the river.

Since we all love pictures, below are a few pics of my setup.

I have a hobby site about crabbing using my inflatable boat Mr Dungeness Crabber , If links are not allowed, could a mod move it please? thanks.

Hey there Mr. D! Welcome! I was trying to figure out where you lived, since you are harvesting Dungeness and I live in Puget Sound (near Dungeness WA), but then I see Canada and know why I didn't recognize the location of any of your pix. I have the Mariner 4 and recently exchanged my Minn Kota 30 for the 55. The model you review on your site (yes I have spent some time there) is only rated for freshwater, so I am very interested to see how it holds up in the salt. Do you have to rinse it in fresh after every use? Right now I only go crabbing in my friend's boat but if I could get my 30 back and use it for crabbing, I just might do that! How long have you been using that motor in the ocean?

These are the sorts of crabs and "bugs" we get here on the Gulf/East coasts:

Hey,

Ya i didnt realize it was meant for freshwater before making the purchase. I took it out over 2 dozen times this past summer. I do run the propeller in a bucket of water when i get home to clean and rinse out any salt that might have been left behind.

Either than that, the trolling motor works well, fresh or salt water.

MrD,

This morning I mentioned your use of that motor to a friend of mine who fresh water fishes with me and he tells a similar story, using a freshwater Minn Kota in salt water for 2+ years and it doing just fine. He said he liberally hosed it down with fresh water after each use and never saw any ill effects. You now have me considering approaching my son-in-law and offering to buy back my c30 from him. When I was able to buy a Minn Kota 55, I sold him the 30 for next to nothing. But he hasn't had a chance to use it and might prefer the money. We'll see.

I friend takes me out for crabbing in his boat now, but if I ever did want to pop out there when he wasn't going, it'd be nice to have the option. So, thanks for that info!

Glad I can help. I have a bucket of fresh water waiting for me when i get back from a crabbing trip. I throw the c30 intot he bucket for about 10 minutes while i unpack everything else. This makes cleaning up very easy.

This might be entertaining for you guys. my first attempt at a vid. I caught a nice trap full of crabs.

Fun video. And I think it's great that you're creating a site for info. related to fishing Dungies.

I'm trained as a invert zoologist, and for I while I focused on Dungies. Mainly because research often involves a good meal and beer. :)

Also, I think there is nothing which is as much fun as crabbing - though I have to say I cheated and used scooters, special baits and scuba.

haha u crack me up with the eating and beer part. awesome carreer path as a zoologist. wish I took an education in the fisheries and aquatic life early on. But i guess fishing and crabbing is what im gunna do to satisfy my biology side. And yes, dinner and beer as well. lol. im curious to what you refer to as 'special bait'

Re: My fave boat, Intex seahawk

We were working on % efficiency of various traps in given substrates & efficacy of bait(s). Some baits and methods slightly better than others. The biggest variable was crab distribution / density / overall skill which directly affected % landed. Our findings were never published.

I will say this (for a beer and some good sourdough) get yourself some scombroid fish. Some of these guys have a high oil dispersion rate which crabs are able to detect better than say - cat food, dog food, chicken offals, squid or other. Dungies aren't too particular about food, but there are some species of oily fish which they go nutZ over. Even though they may go nutZ - it's getting them into the trap and to some extent bait efficacy with regards to soaking time.

When we did underwater survey work of baits the best part of the work was collecting some of the larger ones by hand. We also did passive video work and you should see what comes around the baits. Especially at night.
