So I'm starting my first "big" project in a long time, a boat. I think it is a 1970s glastron. no idea though. I traded a boat trailer with my uncle for this boat and trailer. Thought I would see what you guys think. It has a good floor and transom, I could put it in the lake and row around in it (no motor) and it would float fine, it just isn't the prettiest thing in the world... yet.

my list of things to do are;

re-clear coat or restore clearcoat.
reinforce dash and replace wood behind it.
run all new wiring.
repaint top and bottom.
new seats
new motor
clean up steering wheel
clean up carpet/re-carpet
bow tank.
refinish and repaint wood sides.
and new lights

My dad is giving me a 75hp evinrude that barely runs but the carbs leak. any advice on that? and I'll have to find an evinrude control box cheap somewhere. but this is my project for the summer. hopefully I'll beable to get out on the lakes before the summer is over. any advice is greatly appreciated just don't try to discourage me ;)

Re: My first boat restoration

Welcome to iboats. That is for sure a Glastron. If I was you, I would check the floor and transom very good. If it is original, I bet it is rotted. Better to be safe than sorry. I had a 1975 Glastron GT-150 with a 115 Johnson. That 75hp Rude is a good little engine. They run strong and get good fule mileage (for a outboard). I would watch Craiglist and e-bay for controls. you can also look at www.jaxed.com . That website scans Craigslist and E-bay together at the same time. Old Glastrons are great boats and deserve a second chance. Good luck with the rebuild. Thanks, Steven

I know the floor isn't rotten cause it's rock solid. I can jump on it all day and it doesn't flex, and the transom is good. it was my uncles test boat for the merc 150's after he rebuilt them. it's all pretty solid except the dash, I've got everything off of it except for the steering wheel, I don't know how to remove it. also, does anyone know what model it is? what kind of glastron?

OK so I thought I would update you guys, show how everything is coming along. I've gotten a lot of work done on my boat just getting things put together and such. I do need to clarify I'm NOT doing a full resto, just things that need to be done to make it nicer and more use able for the summer. that being said. This is what I've gotten done so far.

When I first go the trailer, the wires were torn up and cut and held together with tape and twisted together, so I rewired the lights, and now they all work, and I have to say I'm pretty happy with my work!

so now I'm too the dash, and I have all the gauges off, all the switches off, and I'm down to the steering wheel, and it's stuck. GREAT.

and now after my dad helped me get it off (you can see in the previous picture I have a bit of a set back)

Then I got to work chiselling all the rotten wood out from behind the dash, the good news, I got most of the rotten wood out. the bad news; there's still a lot of solid wood back there fiber glassed on that I am yet to find a way to get removed.

so I decided to leave the dash alone till my wrist is usable (two more weeks) and get to work on putting my motor on there, I drilled out my transom for it, slit the steering cable through, and cut a slot in the back of the boat for it to slide through (it needed to be further back then the original hole was because it didn't have enough room) and bolted on the three bolts I had drilled holes for before my drill bit broke, and called it a day. Now all I need is a new drill bit, silicone rubber sealant, sand paper, paint, marine plywood, a good wrist, and registration stickers :)

and this is her, no she's not finished but I still think she's absolutely gorgeous! :) :)

Great work so far. I think those Glastrons are really neat looking boats. That 75 Evinrude should serve you well. If the carbs are leaking they will need rebuilt but are pretty simple to do.

Thankyou! only one is leaking, do you know what kind of rebuild kit I will need? will I need a kit with a float and everything? or just the gaskets? I was thinking I only needed the gaskets but I don't know too much about this stuff (yet)
