My First Cedar Strip

I found a cedar strip 16' Peterborough Royal and rescued it. This is my first cedar strip to recondition and hoped for some advise.

- the ribs need replacing but the bottom has been fiber glassed. What's the best way to tack down the new ribs if I can't nail through the bottom.
- I'd like to get a date of construction - I am tracking down the history but the original owner is not avail - anyone able to date by pics?
- I'd like to put a current and re-conditioned value to it so I know how much to invest - any suggestions?

Any other suggestions are most welcome.

I'm confused.

Wouldn't the ribs be a major component of the scantlings to maintain the hull shape.

In other words, the bottom must attach to the ribs.

some one in the past ruined the value of the boat by applying glass to it. just like a wooden Chris Craft.

Yup - it is what it is. The side ribs are good - but the floor ribs are shot. The fiberglass seems to hold the shape of the boat.

I still need to replace the ribs - should I carefully use screws since I can't nail in from underneath?

i would nail for the bottom the feather and patch the glass.

I suggest going over to the WCHA site (wood Canoe Heritage Association) as thsy are the experts. They will be able to help you date your boat. It is a shame that she has been glassed, though if polyester resin was used it may actually be quite easy to strip the glass off and do a proper restoration (this will increase her value).
