Hello,
yesterday i tried to change the impeller of my Tohatsu M3.5B2 engine for the first time. The engine is about five years old and the water pump has never been replaced before. I had ordered the water pump kit and the service manual and was ready to start.
It all began quite well, first i emptied the gear oil, then i took the lower unit off and unscrewed the water pump housing. I wanted to change the guide plate and the two gaskets as well, because i thought after five years this would be a good idea. The problems began...
It was really difficult to remove the gasket between guide plate and pump base. It was like glued to the pump base. I didnt want to damage the pump base with a metal tool, thats why i tried to remove the gasket with a piece of wood and with a plastic ice scraper from my car. But this didnt work. Finally i carefully used the old guide plate to peel the old gasket from the pump base. Is it normal that this gasket is so hard to remove? Or is it because it has never been changed in five years?

The gasket under the pump base isn't included in the water pump kit, thats why i couldn't replace it. Hope this was ok?

Then i cleaned the pump base and tried to remove all the debris from the old gasket from the two gasket rings in the pump base.
While trying to reassemble everything the second problem occured. Even though i knew i had to be careful not to pull on the driveshaft i pulled and the pinion gear fall from the driveshaft. I had to open the lower unit to put it back in. This wasn't planned at all.
I hope I put everything back together in the right way now, but reconnecting the lower unit, with driveshaft, shift shaft and water tube in line is quite difficult as well. But finally i did it and changing gear works well but i didnt yet test the engine in the water.

The two screws in the lower unit that hold the housing cover of the lower unit where the propeller is, have to be put in with "Perfect Seal" says the service manual. Since i didnt have Perfect Seal i used a blue Loctite bolt adhesive, which is water resistant. I hope this was ok? Or do i really have to use the original Perfect Seal?

I treated all the gasket rings with marine lubricant, hope the lower unit is still water-proof after my adventurous repair...

Sorry, i'm not sure about which of your answers is meant for which question. Is Loctite a good replacement or do i have to use Perfect Seal?
Is this what you meant:

Is it normal that this gasket is so hard to remove? --> Yes.

Or is it because it has never been changed in five years? --> Yes.

The gasket under the pump base isn't included in the water pump kit, thats why i couldn't replace it. Hope this was ok? --> Yes.

Since i didnt have Perfect Seal i used a blue Loctite bolt adhesive, which is water resistant. I hope this was ok? --> No.

Or do i really have to use the original Perfect Seal???

Thanks, Dave
