The learning curve can be steep. A good book can help. Read about boating when you can't get to the water. Chapman's "Piloting and Seamanship" is well worth the money. Check it out at your local library and you will soon own one.

May this be your last mistake. Come to think of it, I hope my last one will be my last one!

Thanks for sharing your unforunate accident. At least now I know when I boat that canal to stay away from the buoy.

Re: My first mistake

I launch out of the south end of seneca lake. and have an equally embarrassing story. I was, and still am, new to boating, when I spotted a orange buoy. I thought to myself " I wonder what that says on the side of it". no naturally I got close enough to read it and it said "danger". Well i again thought to myself "danger of what?" at that moment I had my answer. I hit a large rock under the surface of the water. Of course I had to do it in front of a large boat with a bunch of people partying on it. I heard a couple of laughs as my poor boat was towed back to the dock by a friendly fellow boater.

Just so you know, everyone makes a similar mistake at some point in there life

Re: My first mistake

26 years ago I recieved orders to Jacksonville FL.

Being a midwest boy I quickly found a boat, one I could afford which was not much on military pay but it floated, and engine ran sometimes.

Was in ST. Augustine, me and a buddy drinking beer, 19 years old and having a blast, saw some ripples in the river, I had heard about blues going into a feeding frenzy and wanted to go see for myself first hand.

Put the boat to WOT, was probaly WOT allready but sure it felt like it was going faster, got up on them blues real fast, Just in time to see the sand bar the water was running over causing a rippling effect on the surface, that wasn't a school of blues it was a sand bar, welcome to FL boating.

Of course the river was full of boats and we got laughed at and pointed at, my buddy and I got out and pushed the boat off the bar started the engine and off we go again, no injuries but I did spill my beer, alcohol abuse.

every single boater makes mistakes, we all still do at some time or another, part of the adventure.

Re: My first mistake

We were working on a house last year on the lake, and he lives right next to the boat landing. He gets a prime seat, to watch others make mistakes.... I got to witness one.

This fella took his dad fishing, parked up the road, then about an hour or so later, came back -- threw his crap in the back of his brand new F150, and drove the truck down to the launch, and turned around -- with his tailgate down. The winch pole put a nice little 4 inch bend in the top edge of his tailgate. The poor guy's roll-up cover wouldn't even come down onto the tailgate. He just rolled it back up against the cab, shook his head, loaded the boat, and drove off.

I felt so bad for him. If it were me, I'd be absolutely sick.

hey larky i to was in the southern cannal right around ervays marina comming up from montour falls we possibly hit the same rock they really need to attach a giant arrow to that bouy telling everyone which side to stay on

on a side note the day i did this was during the italian fest and anyone that boats Sencia lake knows how many people are on the water and theres even more on shore watching

Re: My first mistake

sure feels great to have an audience at a time like that :)

The buoy I hit was the one on the east side of the lake. as you leave the canal and head right, over near the shore where route 414 flattens out after coming off the hill from burdett.

I think I am familiar with the buoy you are talking about. I agree, they need to do something different, maybe they should line some buoys up like traffic cones so that there is no mistake. with that canal and some of the boats that go through there it can get tight at times.

Boating mistakes are pretty much a part of boating...you just have to learn from yours and others and try to be as prepared as possible...

I banged a rental into the pier while docking in Florida just last week (no damage...just embarassing). I am thankful that error occured in a rental and not my own boat...

Re: My first mistake

I remember seeing splashing on the surface of the Escalante arm of Lake Powell a few years back, while at wot going down river. Thinking this must be one of those "striper boils" that I'd heard about, I cranked the wheel and circled back, while fumbling to get my pole out of the rack. I eased up to the area, hoping to cash in on some hungry stripers, only to find that it was just waves splashing on top of a big sandstone dome that was 1/2 inch below the surface. Good thing I didn't get too close, or I would have had serious damage. I looked around sheepishly to see if anyone had witnessed my foolish mistake - no one around to see, so I put my pole away and quietly resumed my trip out of the Escalante Arm.

600+ feet deep, 2 miles wide, 40 miles long, and you found the rock! :D
