my first re-build

Ahoy Mates, I just finished my first outboard re-build and I actually got the thing together. Its a 50/35 HP johnson jet that had a bazillion hours on it. I crossed my fingers and started it up for the first time on a garden hose with extra oil and ran it at a fast idle for 15 minutes or so. nothing terrible happened so far. Here's my problem. I put all the carb linkage on the same way it came off and the timing advance lever only moved about a 1/4 inch or so. This didn't seem right to me , so I re-set the linkage lenghts to those listed in my manual and the timing lever moves a bit more, but it still doesn't seem right. My next step is to put the boat in the water and see what happens when I give it some throttle, but I'm afraid something terrible is going to happen if the timing advance is off. I don't own a timing light or a tach. Should I try it out and see what happens or visit a real mechanic? (I'm just a poor, broke fishing guide with a busted motor)
Thanks,
john AKA "All Thumbs Marine"

Re: my first re-build

hello john, you need to beg ,borrow ,or steal a timing light and tach .follow the synch. and link to the "T" and if you did every thing right that motor will run great . make sure that you don't give it too much timing at wide open throttle. do what the book says for w.o.t. timing maybe even 2 degrees less . 2 degrees more will burn a piston. good luck!
