Okay, could not find a ball hone as someone had said, but then another said the ball hone rounded the ports to easily.

Another said just get a 3 stoned 220 grit dingleberry and run it up and down for a minute in each cyclinder. Oh, and another said to keep lubrication flowing why working with the hone, such as wd 40 or something.

Alright, give me the specifics on what to do and not to do, especially concerning my ports. Also if you please tell me how do you get a 30 degree honing, not too steep - not to shallow with a three stones dingleberry.??

Oh, someone said, "dom't do the head just the cyclinder. I do not have a head but rather cyclinders that go up and are encased with two holes for the plugs, how far up do I hone??

1973 merc 200 20hp 2 cycle of course. thanks for your help robert/ryan

Use a dingleberry hone not a 3 stone one. You'll never get the 3 stone one to work for you, and the dingleberries will relieve your ports at the same time. Dingleberry hones are sometimes called 'bottle brush' hones, since they look like a bottle brush.

Lubricate while your honing with a thin or thined oil. TCW-III works fine.

You've refered to the powerhead as a 'head' a few times, and confused some people. A head is commonly known as the part that holds the spark plugs (the cylinder head). Since you're cylinder head is integrated into the block, truely you have no head. :)

You want to get the crosshatch close to 60 degrees (or 30, depending on how you're looking at it) as you can. But your arm is not a machine, so close enough is good enough here. You want to go all the way from the bottom of the bore to the top. If your drill is rotating at 1 rotation per second, you'll want your arm to go up and down a bit better than once per second.

So you get something that looks like this:

Of course, you won't. But that's what you're aiming at.

When you're done, feel the edges of the ports. If they feel sharp like a knife edge, they'll catch the rings as the piston moves up and down in the bore. Post here if that's a problem. It shouldn't be because of the dingleberries.

Then you must clean the block thoroughly, like Hooty said.

Hope this helps!

Terminology point of order: The "ball hone" is also known as "the dingleberries". When you see one, you'll know why. The 3 stone hone is only known as that.

The newbie will do much better with a ball hone. And as you remember from the "discussion" mercury used them at the factory to begin with. You want one only *slightly* bigger than the cylinder diamater. Oil it up well and spin the drill at a "low/meduim" (78prm?) speed while stroking the hone up and down in the cylinder, reverse the drill and do the same. Make sure you go all the way in. The head area does not count, but you wanna get all the walls.

Then clean the walls real well with soap and water and make sure no broken off dingleberries stay in the block. Then oil the walls with TCW-3.

For two holes - your better off just *taking* it to get honed though.

-W

Thank you, well that's just wonderful looked for a ball type and was told it was rare to find so I got the 3 stone one just like I was shown for 30 bucks and ran it slowly up and down the cyclinder for 21 minute as I was told. The pictures can be seen on the letter head "oh no compression 60psi".

I washed out cyclind with dawn three times with hot water and wiped it with clean rag and then used compressed air. I have already put the head back together. Even the machine shop didn't have a ball type. Oh well------

Mistake in previous post----ran the 3-horn stone for 1 min per cylinder as PAUL and others told me to.
