Well I took my 90hp Johnson mounted to a 1990 17' Alumacraft out yesterday for the First Run and I got all the way to the other end of the lake and was moving along wide open when it shut off just like you turned off the key. Scared the @#$% out of me I thought it locked up or something. I hit the switch and it started right back up, But had a dead spot in it and would not run at WOT. So I nursed it back to the loading dock and tore into the motor the first thing I thought was the fuel filter must be dirty and thats what it was. A big chunk of rubber was over one of the gas lines removed that and it was smooth sailing after that. I was able to get it up to 40mph Does that sound right?
I don't know how fast I should be able to go!

More importantly, what is the RPM?

That engine needs to be able to turn 5500 at a minimum.

I don't know on the RPM's my guage did not work will have to try to figure out what is wrong with it. I checked the speed with a GPS. I found out what was wrong with the Speedometer. The Pitot has been broke off of the back of the boat so I will need to get a new one.

The tach gets its signal from the rectifier/regulator so check that first. It is the same source for your battery charging, so a voltmeter on the battery running vs not running will usually tell you if there is output. You probably have a regulator so if the battery is fully charged that may not work.
