Ok, so this past week I pulled my lower unit off my 2000 55hp commercial motor, as well as both carbs for rebuilding. It wasn't running on both cylinders at idle, and I had verified spark was good, which left me with no or not enough fuel. Only did it in gear, oddly. Anyways, the water pump was just precautionary since I was pulling the carbs anyways.
So, all goes well, all bolts come out, all parts come apart and go back together as they should, and I get her put back together yesterday afternoon, right before a huge storm rolls in. I did not have time to test her out, just got it back together and pushed back in the garage.
So, today I roll her out, hook up the muffs, turn on the water, prime the bulb and the manual primer on the engine, and give her a pull (yeah, rope start). SNAP!!! The d*mn rope breaks off right at the handle on the VERY 1st pull! Ok, fine, so I take it apart and fix it, and then I have no recoil tension anymore. Are you freakin kidding me? So I pull out the manual and start going through it, trying to make sense of it, and some guy in an F150 pulls into my driveway. He hops out and walks up to me and just makes a comment "So, I saw you workin on your motor and thought I'd stop by. That's what I do for a living." Well, how handy I think, so I speak up and say "Wow, how ironic you happened to stop by right now. This just happened." So I explain what just happened, and he sits there and helps me pull it apart, shows me how to fix it, and then heads off back to do what he was going to do in the 1st place (he was heading to the dump). He gave me some cards as well, since I have a friend who doesn't want to do his own carbs and water pump on a 2002 Merc 25. So I get it all back together, and voila!, we have recoil again.
Well, something still isn't right with the fuel system, so I look over it again, and I'm a dumb*ss, hooked the fuel lines up backwards going in/out of the fuel pump. Get that fixed, prime it up, two pulls and she fires right up! Runs great too. The real test will be in the water, b/c the motor wouldn't do it on muffs, it would only do it in the water and in gear. Hope this fixed my problem.
Oh, and it pumps water very well also. It didn't show any signs of low pressure before, but I did it just to be safe. The impeller was definitely worn down, so I'm glad I did.
So, if anyone wants to know, the guy was Charles Sebag (I believe), of CSS Services (the owner), and he's located in Orlando off of Hwy 50, around Bithlo he said. I have his # if anyone would be interested. He just gained my business, if I ever have a need. Also said he has used parts for outboards as well.
