My motor starts the first pull except when it doesn't?

If I start my motor cold or warm and do a good solid pull it starts right up. If I do a half pull or something then it takes 10 min to start warm or cold. Choked or not choked. Anything I can do about it?

Its a 68 mercury 200 (20 hp). Its not a big deal that I have to pull it so hard when it happens, I just thought I would see what I could maybe do.

Hi,

You may need the points reset if they have not been checked in a couple of years. They also started better if the idle was a little rich. 1 to 1 and 1/4 turn out. They worked pretty good at 1 1/8th as I remember. It all depends on haw much time the engine has on it. The crankshaft seals get a little worn and will leak a bit causing poor starting too when you check the points look at the seal and see if it is spitting some oil into the stator plate. If it is I would put in a new one as long as you are in there.
