Well I guess the title says it all. After a few years of talking about wanting another boat since I sold my first one years ago I found one, did the research, and for the price figured why not...
It?s a 1987 well craft cuddy 192 classic. and yes it does have the dreaded merc 4 cyl in it. I know I know most of you hate it. BUT, I also got a 2005 magic tilt trailer that is in perfect condition, garmin gps, vhf radio, depth/fish finder, new cd player with marine speakers and ipod hook up, life preservers, fire extinguisher... all electronics work on the boat, also has already been upgraded to alternator and 4 inch heat exchanger. checked compression on all 4 cylinders, all between 135 and 140. pressure tested cooling system, no leaks, no water or coolant in oil, steering does not bind at all. shifter is well lubricated and works well. also got a stack of receipts of ALL the maintenance done over the years and a service manual. all for $400. so I took it. got it home and started to REALLY go thought it. tuned up the engine and cleaned the carb, drained fuel and filled. changed oil and filter. engine runs perfect! checked for soft spots on the deck... none! found the sea water pump impellor was pretty worn, so I replaced the impellor and housing and all gaskets. checked the out drive oil, no signs of water intrusion or metal flakes. however just before reinstalling the lower unit I checked to make sure the oil seals in the upper half were ok... barely touched them and they fell apart, so that?s tomorrows project. good I found them now. oh yea, had some frozen trim cylinders but got a set off ebay for 100 with lines and all. boat also had the engine coupler replaced professionally last year, got the receipt. so I think so far I got a good deal. but still I know allot of you dislike them, but I am very mechanically inclined. I am a professional auto tech by day, so I figure with my know how and a service manual not much I cant do. anybody have any tips on replacing those seals? Its an alpha 1 out drive, they are the seals between lower drive and upper, they seal around the drive shaft that comes out of the lower drive and couples with upper drive.
