My New Boat - Should I rename her or not?

Hey everybody. I haven't been around the forums since the summer. Been too busy boating, selling the old boat, and then buying a new one! So, now that winter is pretty much on the doorstep and the boat is all put away, thoughts of NEXT SEASON are full steam ahead!

My last boat came with a name and I kept it because I liked it. My new boat already came branded with a name. At first, I thought it would have to go... but it's been growing on me over the last month.

So....

A dock mate of mine said I should be safe and find out the renaming ceremony in case I change the name. When I said I may keep the name and strip off the old worn out vinyl and reapply a sexy new decal of the name, he said I should find out if there is a need for the ceremony because of that.

I need your help folks!

Jeff

The Neptune ceremony is BS. Renaming is very simple: you must give her a name she prefers. Fortunately, most small boats have extremely poor names so an upgrade is easy.
Go the other way and you're courting disaster. Just look what happened on the Chicoutimi (nee Upholder).

I dunno about the ceremony being BS Paul. The reason I'm being careful is friends of ours bought a new/used boat, only did the renaming ceremony and while everyone was on the doc afterwards, the stove caught fire and it burned up some of the interior! Another buddy had a season of excellent boating. During the winter he refinished his boat and renamed it. Since then, nothing but engine problems.

But does that support my theory about the names? I mean, were the boats ashamed of them? :) :D

Good point Paul. I've seen some pretty bad names too. I thought my new/old boat's name was bad. But my kids love the name because it reminds them of Star Wars (her name is Phantom) and it's been growing on me since - even if the true meaning of the name is from the opera.

Maybe I should get the goods on all this talk from my harbour master dad over in Cape Breton! (yes, I'm a displaced Bluenoser).

I bought a 23ft 1930s wooden boat.Completely revamped it and renamed it. no ceremony no big deal.Ran wonderfully until i sold it.New owner completly rebuilt the boat and installed new drive train, renamed with no formalities and so far (2 years) no problems.
And I kind of felt bad because I had named it after my long passed grand parents. You would think if anything that might cause problems.Ceremonies are a nice tradition simply to be enjoyed.

Jeff....It sounds like you may be at least a little superstitious. So you better play it safe. If you don't play it on the safe side and you start having problems you will never stop kicking yourself.

Here's an unsubstantiated rumor - I never researched it, but it's an interesting idea...

If a boat has been properly named and the boat likes the name, but you don't, give it a 'nickname'. The 'real' name must be on the boat somewhere, but it doesn't have to be the most prominent, just don't put it in a place of shame (bilge, head etc... )

Anyone ever head of this?

OK... so, how do you know if your boat likes its name or not!? I've spent many nights talking to the boat... but have yet to hear an answer.

I've always heard when you don't hear anything, things are good. When you do hear something, the sheet has usually hit the fan. :'(

Haha, it's 2006 and people are still saying there might be truth to these superstitions? Seriously?

The naming ceremony is for fun, friends, family, and drinking. Nothing more. Do whatever is fun.
