Here's my new lil project, its an 83 Sunhatch 196. Has a 305 with really low hours on a rebuild. Got her for 700 bucks and when Im done I'll have a total investment of 1700! Needed a lower unit to be useable but the gimble ring was SHOT so I got a replacement and repaired it myself. I also am half way done re doing all the wood in the boat. I sanded it, stained it and then put seven fat coats of automotive clear on it. The interior looks 10,000 times better I think. I recently put thru hull in her and tossed the old log manifolds for some newer center rise mani's from a 350 OMC. I have yet to take pictures of the install. I just need to yank the motor to replace the gimble, get me some bellows and toss her back together for the season! I can't wait to get her out on the water!

What a steal! The seats look to be in good condition, and the refinished wood trim looks great! Looks like above the water line the gelcoat should buff out nicely.

Thanks! Its a funny story of how I got the boat, It was a "it's small world" kinda thing. The boat did buff up pretty nice. I'm gonna finish it up in the spring when it warms up! Now she just sits in the back covered in snow.

Hey Mac,

I know there's not a lot of traffic down here in the Wellcraft forum, so I just wanted to give you a prop for the pics. I'm new to boating with an Excel 20SX and really looking forward to getting out this summer.

Please keep us posted, especially on your buffing procedures. My boat is mechanically sound, but the gelcoat is faded and I'd like to bring it back.

Once its faded a fair amount, its usually done. You can try to buff it several times a year, but the chalk always comes back. If you use a mild compound on it to remove the top oxidized layer of gel, then clearcoat it, it may hold up. I'd search some of the other areas of the forums for better advice and options. (Start a new thread for the issue as well)
