Hello,

A few days ago I bought some new motors to work on. One is a 1955 Johnson 3hp and the other is a repainted 1965 evinrude Lightwin, I paid 50 euro's (about $60) for both. The guy told me that the Johnson runs, but I haven't tested it yet.
Both outboards has a little bit low compression, but I suspect the rings are just stuck.
I've allready cleaned the carb and fixed the ignition (new wires, set points, new coils) on the '65 Lightwin.

I keep you posted about the progress and I'll try to post some pic's :D

Hello again JohnRudeMan. I see you've been bitten by the vintage OMC bug again :) Conrats on getting such a good deal on your new toys. How is the '58 7.5 running?

Hello kfa4303, good to hear from you :)! The '58 7.5 runs great and the compression seems to be awsome, but I don't have a compression tester, so I don't know for sure...
Today I have ran the JW-11, but it doesn't run very well, so I guess it needs a good tune-up :).

I keep you posted on the progress.

Greetings from the Netherlands

I have a problem with my JW-11. Today I tuned it up (cleaned the carb, set points), but it doesn't run. It starts on every pull, but it dies after 2 sec.
The coils are good and I get good spark on both cilinders, the carb gets enough fuel too.

Does anybody has an idea?

Greetings

......hmmmmm Perhaps the spark plug wires are backwards? The top cylinder wire usually has a small meatl band on it. If that's not it, I'm thinking it may be a fuel delivery issue :/ Did you check the compression with a gauge? The fact that it starts and runs for a bit means the comp is probably ok, but you never know. Here's a handy link that may have some answers. Keep us posted.

Did you install a carb kit? Clean under the welch plug? Install the high speed nozzle gasket?

Thanks. The plug wires aren't backwards and the spark seems to be good... Could it be water that gets into one (or both) of the cilinders?

No, I didn't install a carb kit, I just cleaned the carb and everything looks clean. I didn't put a new nozzle gasket in, could that be the problem?

I would try cleaning the carb again (rebuild would be best, but you may not have a kit handy). I had to do the same thing to my little air-cooled 3 hp Gamefisher yesterday. It would start ok, but bog down when I gave it gas, then it wouldn't start at all even though it had good spark and compression. So I decided to take the carb off. The passages inside the carb were so tiny that it didn't take much to interfere with them. I used some aerosol carb cleaner and blew out all the passages thoroughly, reassembled the carb and it runs great again.

I keep you posted :)!

Traded away my JW-11 and wish I had it back now! It ran like the proverbial sewing machine. Great forum signature with all those classic old motors. I got started in this insanity when I was a pup with a Mercury KD-4(S) like the one pictured. Destroyed it doing stupid teenager stuff.

Another thought about your JW-11's running issue is the cork float in the carb. Might be saturated. What do the spark plugs look like after running? Good luck!
