Well, I finally picked up my new boat this past week and I am very happy - BUT? Apparently hydraulic steering was an option, and not mandatory with a Yam 150 hp motor.

Soooo, I am looking at a Hydraulic Kit to install on the boat/motor. Has anyone installed one of these kits before? Is it difficult? Basically the resevoir is installed behind the steering wheel, and you run the hydraulic hoses to the rear (motor). The cylinder is installed at the front of the motor with use of preexisting hardware. There is no need to remove the motor completely, correct?

nice rig!!
if I'm not mistaken the existing cable steering on that motor sits below the powerhead,,this may be a challenge for the transition. A friend of mine had to have his cable version repaired,,$1,200.00

best of luck!!

not rocket science, but depending on the space on each side of the motor, will determine if it has to be lifted for installation.

The motor is a 2009 Yam 150 hp. Come to think of it, the steering maybe as Iprizman stated, and sits below the powerhead. I was hoping for an easy installation. I have a feeling it isn't hard to do, although I am not sure how the motor is setup. I know I have plenty of clearance for the cylinder back there.

The boat is new. Hewescraft 22' (24' w/ extended transom) SeaRunner, Yam 150.

I did a search on Hydraulic Steering and read a lot of different opinions. Obviously Hydraulic is the way to go for higher horsepower. So, if I purchase a kit, would you recommend Baystar or Seastar? Would the Baystar kit be adequate for my application? The Seastar Pro, or Seastar kit seems to be rated higher horsepower, but maybe overkill or unnecessary spent $$ if the Baystar will do the trick?
