Just picked up a BIG project boat on a trailer .
72 Glastron V153 futura.
She is tight but when I stopped and parked the truck , got out , I could hear water trickling / swishing at the front of the bow.
Figured there must be some water in the hull or something since its been stored outside.
Grabbed the front of the trailer and lifted her up to see if anything drained out the back hole..... nada .
Im new to boating as Im an auto mechanic and she does not have an O/B on her yet.
Any help from you guru's would be great.

Thank you

Re: my new to me boat is making a swishing sound?

I had a 1972 Glastron V177. Is the V153 an outboard or I/O? Mine was an I/O and I heard that noise frequently. It is the gas tank - located right under / behind the bow seats. I guess the tank could be in the same place for an outboard model - just not sure.

Wild guess here but...Maybe water trapped in the bow in front of the flotation. Flotation is probably waterlogged too being older.

If you dont see the tank(s) in the back then it is fuel and the tank is in front.

No Tanks in the back . Tanks would be under the bow , yes ?
My guess is that there is water in the bilge from it being stored outside and bow was lower than back so water wasnt able to drain out . Plug is out of the back and I will tilt it and leave it for a few days .

I thought that since its an O/B it wouldnt have a on board tank and that they would be external tanks that would go under transom ?

This boat would probably have had external gas tanks. As for the noise you are hearing I would bet that the bow is full of water and since you said the boat sat outside I would proably guess the floor maybe rotten or well on its way along with the stringers below.

On my old Lund I too had water in the bow under the floor, upon taken a core samples of the floor found it rotten as well as the stringers and the floatation foam was soaked. You maybe up for an expensive do it yourself project.

Sorry,

how do I take samples? I think it may be best for me to take it to a marine center and have them look it over before I put any money into?

Well you aren't going to like it, but I took a hole saw and drilled a some holes in the floor to look. If you do not have any issues you have to plug the holes again. But I knew my floor was in bad shape as I had soft spots in it while walking around, so I was not worried about putting 6 inch holes in it.

BTW I did not get the water out of my bow until I tore out the foam under the deck, and it was a lot of water.

OK , thx for the info. Im not afraid of cutting holes in the floor as my neighbor at my shop is a carpenter and a boater . My floors are solid other than 1 small 6" diameter spot behind the rear seat. Other than that there solid!
This is the soft spot.

Looks like my carpenter neighbor and I get to try our hands at rebuilding a floor and boat. Since I got it for $260 with the trailer and I have built ALOT of cars , I think Ill give this one a go . I had no plans to put it in the water this year anyways.

I was assuming you were buying this as a full rebuild project. Glastrons, although neatly designed, weren't particularly well built. There is little question that the foam, and all the wooden components of this hull will need to be replaced.

Re: my new to me boat is making a swishing sound?

In most cases a "little spot" usually equates to "a lot of rot". Just because the deck only has the one are of concern doesn't mean it's not hiding rotted stringers, wet foam, etc. These are cool old boats and have a lot of fans around so if it's salvageable, then save it. There's lots of threads on here of full on restorations and even several Glasstron owner pages as well. From the looks of the few pics you posted, it looks as if you've got a great foundation there. If you post lots of pics you'll get some great advice right here at iboats and before you know it, she'll be screaming down the lakes again.

Any ideas on what you're putting on the back to power her yet?

One way of looking at it - most people come her asking if there boat could be water logged - you're ahead of the game since you already know the answer to that one.

Seriously, I think it's a nice looking boat, and an easy boat to work on. Since it sounds like you are capable, I think it's going to be a fun restoration project, and in the end you will have a boat that you know the condition of inside and out.

Also curious what you're going to power her with! My vote if I get one - merc tower!

The sloshing sound and the soft spot tiny as it may be should raise concern. If water is trapped and the foam is waterlogged then your probably carrying around a couple hundred pounds extra weight which can affect performance. How heavy she feel when ya tilted her!? I'd core everything just to be certain although it sounds like she may need a lil work but that's no prob since you have the best resource at your finger tips "THE DRY DOCK"
