Trim tab to compensate for torque steer.

Both guys above are correct! I noticed that on my alpha Gen II outdrive that anode is flat!

So if your boat steers "straight", mark where the fin is BEFORE you loosen it up to replace it when it starts to pit.

That's becasue you have power steering and the OP does not. Yours is just an anode!

Re: My 'Newbee question of the day'

Thanx to all who provided quality answers! I think that it is clear that the component in question is a combination zinc anode and a trim tab.

And to those who provided comic relief (even if the 'muffler-bearing' answer is older than outdrives), thank you too! :)

Re: My 'Newbee question of the day'

My boat was missing it when I bought it, so I installed one. I understand the "trim tab" purpose of it, but can someone explain the "sacreficial anode" purpose?

Thanks

It will get eaten away by electrolysis before anything else on the boat. Really important if you run in salt. Without it your outdrive starts to get pitted and serious damage can occurr.

Thanks for the info. I don't run in saltwater, but still need it for the trim purpose.
