i have a late1988 evinrude 14 hp( yes a 14hp) that is unbeleivably L O U D. is it possible to cover the hood while underway, or even coat the inside of the hood with sound deadning materials... since the motor is water cooled and not air, theoreticaly it shouldn't hurt if the sound deadning keeps it the heat, should it!?!?<br />i use the motor on a jon boat, its a tiller and i sit RIGHT next to the beast. also, any info on why they made a 14 would be grand

The 14 was an economy model and an export motor, not commonly seen in the States.

You might try some of that thick black auto body rustproofing on the inside of the hood to help quiet it down. Most of the noise is coming straight back out of the carb. You could try some coarse air filter foam right in the outer throat. Just cut it slightly large and stuff it in. If it causes problems, it'd be easy enough to remove. Specifically, I'm thinking of a filter from a Lawn Boy. Other filters I've seen are too fine and you couldn't possibly get enough air flow to get decent performance. (If you have a choke rather than a primer, this would not be an option.)
