 Well I went to go take the powerhead off my outbard today and me and my buddy lost. We took off what seemed to be 100 bolts (heads, carbs, diff. links etc.) to try to lighten it up....I goto take off the 6 main bolts and the seal starts to break which is a good thing....but no matter how hard we lifted it wouldnt budge from the drive shaft =( i know i should use an engine lift and I dont have one...and the motor is at a slight tilt (not verticle) since thats as far as the trim will go. we both felt a little beat by an inanimate object lol

any hints you guys might add...I'm going to try with 3 guys but who knows if that will help.

BTW its a 1995 150hp V6

i always drop the lower unit first. if the splines are rusted it is much easier.

Me too. It could also be binding on the studs near the exhaust, but removal of the LU will make that clear.

Re: My Powerherad Beat me

Do you guys mean the very bottom of the outboard? mine looks like its in 3 sections? powerhead, middle section and lower section. yeah it seemed liek the only thing stopping us from lifting it off was the drive shaft....so are you saying that if I unbolt the very bottom section that whole shast should slide out?

Sounds like the shift rod since you were able to move the head a little bit.

That is a pretty heavy powerhead, BTW. Drop the LU. If it comes off the splines are not rusted into the crank which is very good.

My '98 Johnny 150HPV6 has molded in lift eyes, one by the starter, one diagnally across the motor to the port rear. I use a chain connecting the lift points to the header of my garage door.

Re: My Powerherad Beat me

ya know I contemplated removing the lower unit from the exhaust housing...now looking at me repair manual it looks like if I remove that the shift rod and drive shaft should drop right out and voila the powerhead should come right off then!

yeah I think the powerhead weighs about 270lbs..my manual states the whole outboard as 375 lbs

Re: My Powerherad Beat me

So just to get this straight because I'm going to go again tomorrow after work....Just unbolt and drop the lower unit and the drive shaft should come with it? and then I can just lift the power head off the exhaust housing?

Re: My Powerherad Beat me

HOLY SI$%

well finally got my powerhead home and in my basement
took me a 2 other big guys to carry it to the trunk of my car and then we some how made it down my 2 1/2' wide basement stairs LOL

it was such a ***** to get off.....I dropped the lower unit and drive shaft which was a piece of cake BTW. then i unbolted the 6 main studs and then 1 of the exhaust housing bolts ( which i had no idea connected to the powerhead) then the last bolt would not budge!!!! took 45 minutes, a long pipe and a 250lb jack dude sitting on the bar just to move the bolt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it was awkward to move to say teh least and luckily the only single part that broke while transporting it was the cheap plastic fuel filter thing that the fuel line connected to...so no bid deal really!

ahhh and now i get to spend all winter dissasembling it to the smallest part and replacing/machining a bunch of stuff ;)

Re: My Powerherad Beat me

you've got to get yourself a hoist,
theres lots of them cheap on craigslist all the time,
I just paid $140 for a barely used hoist and engine stand.

at least rent one.!

Re: My Powerherad Beat me

yeah I'm going to work on something for sure....problem is that my boat is parked in a spot backwards and cant really get a hoist in there. But I'm going to take the whole outboard section by section to my house and then build a stand out of 2x4's.

when I have the block stripped for machining ill reassemble it upstairs since im not lugging that back up my basement stairs. and im going to bring the throttle batteries, gas tank etc and make a test area at my house before I mount it back on the boat.

Re: My Powerherad Beat me

I have a V6 looper, last week I took it off, loaded it in my van and got it out again at the house , then mounted it on the engine stand, on my own.

Its not so much the weight as the awkward top heavy shape
2x8 PT makes a good transom stand adapter.

Re: My Powerherad Beat me

yeah it is very awkward and i was scared to hold it by any fragile part as not to break it...but me and 2 of my buddies grabbed it by the cover mount studs and the carb bodies....it was still a tad on the heavy side...has to be at least 250 lbs!

Re: My Powerherad Beat me

Theres 2 lifting loops on the cylinder block, near the top, I would put strap (or chain) hooks through those and loop it around a 4x4 , then 2 guys could put it over their shoulders and carry the powerhead.
Getting it upstairs again, I might try chaining it to my trucks bumper and dragging it up a plank or ramp of some sort...slowly.
Or take it upstairs one piston at a time.!

Re: My Powerherad Beat me

yeah...what I would like to do is tear it down completely and while the block is getting that one sleeve replaced clean all the parts and reassemble up stairs in my office....wife just wanted it in my nasty dungeon of a basement because of the smell....so now I have to be in a dungeon like a mad little scientist.

well got the flywheel off...that was easy!!! just tooked the 5 bolts off and jiggled it a bit and used 2 flat screw drivers (not under the flywheel teeth) and just lifted it right up! seems though as the engine is seized...I think because of that shot piston. so i guess i'll have to take crank, rods and other pistons out first then use a rubber mallet and bang that bad piston out....at least thats how I think i can do it.
