I have Progressive and had to use both in water towing and roadside assistence. I had to pay out of pocket but I got immediate refund from Progressive with no questions asked. You should also get SeaTow or another in water towing coverage that covers where you go boating. It's cheap and good to have. I will not tow anyone unless it's an emergency. Everyone should have tow coverage or not have a boat.

so I have 500$ in towing right now.... I need to get another policy from SeaTow? or whatever is up on lake powell? in addition?

as far as medical costs...I have BCBS through my employer... should I check with them if we're covered for injury on the boat/ in the water?

as far as bodily injury? am I safe/ acceptable?

If I bump another vessel and someone hurts their neck?

We carry $1 million liability. People are sue crazy and they seem to figure that if you can afford to boat than you must be worth something. I personally would bump the liability up to $500,000 minimum. I bet the annual premium difference is minimal.

Your liability coverage is very low, as has been pointed out. Your medical payments coverage (none) is to cover the actual out-of-pocket medical costs incurred by OTHERS on your boat, not you or your family. That's usually a "throw-in" with decent liability coverage ($100,000 or better per person). As far as emergency boat towing insurance, the $500 coverage on your boat policy will probably cover just about any situation you might encounter where and how you boat. Even in situations where a likely tow bill would range upwards of $2,000, tow insurance is for those who can't afford, or choose not to take the risk, of putting that sum on their credit card. Some people seem to think that without tow insurance, the commercial outfits will not come and get you in an emergency, but they will. You need to give them your insurance membership number, or your credit card number with enough room on the card to cover their anticipated towing fee. Tow insurance for boats is expensive for the risk insured against, and I don't buy it. After 40 years boating, I'm way ahead of the game, and that doesn't mean I've never been towed ... my 2?.

Dang, you wont tow anyone? Thats a real shame, ive been towed, and ive towed others, problems arise on the water that cannot always be anticipated and/or helped, I kinda thought helping each other on the water was kinda an unwritten "code" among us fellow boaters. Ill tell you this, around here the boating community helps each other. The 2 times ive been towed, it was ALWAYS the very FIRST boat that happened across me that offered to tow, and if I see someone with an issue, I am the very FIRST person to ask to assist. Call me crazy but I believe in sea karma... Pay it forward fellow boaters, it may be you that needs help one day....

And in regard to the OP, my west.marine advantage whatever for $150 or something around that, boat us unlimited towing for that price. Im not sure if thats only thru west marine, but seems like cheap "insurance" for me...

Oh, and you have the knowledge, experience and equipment needed to do the job safely? And you don't have children aboard that can get in the way and maybe even hurt?

Sure, crap happens that can't be anticipated. But the best boaters are well prepared with tools, spare parts and yeah maybe even a kicker motor. I see too many idiots out there that run out of gas because their gas gauge doesn't work? That IS anticipated.

The unwritten code of helping is just that - helping - it doesn't mean towing.

If they are sinking, I'll throw them PFDs and help them aboard my boat. If they don't have an anchor, I give them one of mine and ask them if they would please return it later. I am equipped with a cellphone and a VHF. I'll gladly call the CG or SeaTow for them, then wait with them while they are on the way.

But I won't tow them. My boat is not equipped for towing, nor do i have the expertise. I won't risk the wellbeing of my family or my boat. On the other hand, I AM equipped to help myself with my kicker, or call for help if necessary. And If I have to call SeaTow I'm insured for that too.

Thank you stachi, I guess maybe im just too nice, but to jims123, no kids, yes I have proper towing equipment as I would suspect most responsible boaters will, I just dont understand the mindset that if someone needs help that you would NOT help them, I grew up around boats and me and my family are very generous with our help as we are not as lucky as maybe you are jims123 and cant afford extra motors on our boats. Maybe its just the way I was raised by a marine, to help our fellow man, regardless of race age color or creed... Especially in this semi exclusive club of boat owner/operators... And a general attitude towards the less fortunate, in this case another in need of a tow. Just last week I pulled over in 100 degree florida heat and changed a tire for an elderly man, he offered me ten bucks, which I gracously declined, I was even late for my appointment, not to mention soaked in sweat. But I would now suspect the tires on my truck will last ten years because of this

i towed a 24 foot sea ray with a 15 foot four winns and a 70 horse evinrude over 4 miles. it was not fun nor was it easy but its life......i towed my dads 20 foot sunbird with a 5.0 v8 with my 15 foot peterborough 70 over 5 hours back to the marina once too, life goes on.....as for insurance, i have none, if i am stupid enough to slam my boat into another vessel or land, shoot me first.

Maybe its just semantics. Helping people is the American Way. One time I gave a guy a ride 20 miles to another ramp so he could get his car and trailer. Another time I changed a guy's sparkplugs for him so he get his motor running and go home. I mean, what person doesn't even have a spare sparkplug and wrench in his boat? Lucky I had a spare plug of the right type in my toolbox! And yes, I have helped people along the side of the road.

Just don't ask me to tow you. I have SeaTow's number and I'll even call them for you. I AM equipped for most everything, but the location of my swim platform and kicker bracket preclude the use of a proper bridle.

Replacement Cost Personal Effects: No coverage

Why not personal effects? My iPhone would be $400 +/- to replace. It would be covered under personal effects. I checked with Progessive when I put our policy in force. Stuff just happens. I dropped my keys into the harbor once! Imagine that feeling, hehe, I paid a diver from the dive shop $75 to go get them. As a fellow diver, we really dont need much of a reason to go down. Anyway, my point is, the coverage is worth the $$$, espeacially if you have kids around!

Why not personal effects?

Because making claims is what causes your rates to go up. I wouldn't ever put in for this kind of claim so I wouldn't bother with the coverage. Just my opinion.

Yes and an ipad won't breech the deductible. As for towing, I towed a 22 footer once with one of my Bowriders maybe 6 years ago and did some good damage around the tow hooks/transom glass. The people knew their boat wasn't sea worthy and they chose to load 8 people up and go out anyway. After that bad experience, I am inclined to call for a tow instead of towing someone but amazingly haven't needed to help since. My take on this is that you do need more coverage but also the limit of your coverage is the point to which they will sue you/your ins co. An excess policy or an umbrella policy is great to protect your hard earned assets. As for the deductible, for my progressive boat policy, I believe it is $500 as well which is well worth it if I hit a sunken object and destroy my outdrive. For my house however, I'm with ezmobee and carry a $2,500 deductible because I wouldn't make a claim for anything small. I've been with a lot of insurance companies for all of my vehicles but always find myself back with Progessive as they seem to really have the claims paying process figured out. After my wife rolled our tow vehicle and completely destroyed it, they got a check in my hands in a week for more than I paid for it a year earlier. The rate increase was only 10% which was more than fair.

Don't skimp on the liability or medical payments. Those are the ones that can financialy ruin you. As far as towing goes it really depends upon where you're boating. I'm generally on a pretty big lake, Clarks Hill, but there are a lot of boat ramps so its pretty easy to get someone to safety. I've given couple of tows and its not that big a deal if you have some idea about what you're doing and take your time. The one time I could have used a tow (broke outdrive on an unseen underwater object) no one came by in the time it took the kids and me to paddle to the ramp. I have Progressive and they handled that claim expeditiously.
