My Project (with pics)

I just recently bought a boat and it needs a little work such as flooring, paint job, wiring ect.

I have a few questions...

1) When installing the flooring (i think my dad bought some sort of pressure treated plywood or something like that) do i need to drill a few holes into it so when water gets into the boat (from jumping in and out of the water or from the rain) it can drip down and out the back plug?

*btw...im new to this whole boating thing so im not familiar with all the parts, im a car guy*

2) Anyone know any good sites that sell marine carpets with a whole sort of colours?

3) im thinking about repainting the boat...what are good combinations of colours? I was thinking orange and black (and im making custom seats)

4) And lastly, are there any sites out there that explain how to install gauges? The boat i bought did come with a few gauges but they weren't connected cause the previous owner had no time

And ill post pics later with boat info if needed.

Thanks

Re: New to boats, need help

We love pics so post 'em when you can. I just did a similar project (see below) about 2+ years ago. I got my seats and carpet from BassPro. Overton's and Cabelas seem to have a similar selection and prices. I got the lower-end seats. They were BassPro branded but they were made by Wise. I'm not impressed at all with the quality. I would step up a notch or two from the bottom of the line. As far as colors go, Pick a seat color combination you like then match your carpet and exterior colors to that. I have navy and gray seats and picked navy carpet for the floor and gray for the sides. I wish I had reversed this though because the navy shows dirt SO BAD. So pick something that won't show the dirt as much for your floor. For gauges, if you get the teleflex gauges from BassPro, etc. they come with pretty good instructions in the box.

Re: New to boats, need help

1) NO HOLES Your deck should be one piece of ply coated with polyester resin and 1-1/2 oz. mat. Don't need roven. If you use the PT lumber it is imperative that it is completely dry. There are many pro's and con's about using that type of lumber anyway. If dry the resin should bond.

2) Do a Google search for marine carpet and you will get 1,360,000 responses. Ought to be something in that pile that catches your fancy.

3) All dark colors have a tendency to fade faster than lighter one's do. Keep it on the light side. You'll look like a Halloween boat in black and orange.

4) See ezmobee's reply

5) :D

Well if it helps for comparison sake......I just installed a new rack and pinion for this season and it turns VERY VERY easily. That tube should be arrow straight.

Here she is...i got it for $1000 CAD, its a 15' and im not familiar with what kind of boat it is. It runs great and it floats so im off to a good start. It has a 70hp Evinrude with no problems.

well, ripped off the carpet and the floor and to my surprise i find 10 pounds of rotting wood:mad: so im gonna replace them with cedar lumber. What kind of glue/adhesive would be the best to bind it to the fiberglass.

Heres my to do list...
-new floor+carpet
-new sound system (from my old truck that got in an accident, it had an awsome sound system)
-new steering wheel (this ones cracked)
-few new gauges
-paint job
-new seats (custom-made by my mom-shes good)
-redesign the windshield

I guesstamate that i will completely finish this boat within a month

Have you checked the transom for rot? Often when one goes the other will.

Spend a few hours in this section reading what others have done in replacing their floor. Most all questions have been asked and answered many times.

Don't be surprised if your do list takes far longer than a month.

Have fun. You will feel a great sense of accomplishment when you are done.

Hate to say it but the aluminum plate is just a temporary fix.The rot fungus will just keep spreading. You need to get rid of all the rotten wood..

i think cedar is too soft, and that windshield is classic. you will ruin the lines and vintage of the boat. keep it. orange and black is going to be striking and look good. but becareful when doing upolstery, black gets really hot in the sun, and the girls or you won't like it when they scorch their tush.

If your going to rebuild the transom, it will be easier to separate the top from the bottom, but i am redoing the floors on my boat and leaving it as one piece. You'll have to decide how easy or hard it is to access all the areas where you want to work, and if its hard to get to them, then remove the deck. And i know absolutely nothing on seacast so someone else may be able to answer that for you.

USE COMPOSITES FOR THE TRANSOME! No rot then! I forget what its called but its just some nice plastic/composite.

Re: My Project (with pics)

I would NOT paint the hull black,, its hard to keep clean, scratches show up real bad, plus the hull gets real HOT, those temps are transferd inside the boat, my buddy had a black cabin cruiser and it was unbearable to be inside the cabin in hot weather. even outside in the driver seat was a cooker. no black seats either.. go with a light colored hull with a couple black stripes?? same with the seats?

I noticed the V-Sonic on the dash and went over to my neighbors boat to look at as his and it is almost identical to what I see on yours---gauge cluster and all down to the V-Sonic emblem. His boat is a restored 1966 Mark Twain V-Sonic.
