My prop is slipping

I have a 1972 Mercury 1150 115hp IL6. I had alot of work done to it and it runs great. I took it back out for the first time this Memorial Day weekend. It ran graet all weekend until we were about to leave it started bogging out. The engine was still reved up but it wasn't going any where. I tried it in reverse and the same thing happened.

Once I got it out of the water I checked the prop and it was good. While the motor was in N i could spin it both ways. When I put it in F I could only turn it one way and when I did I heard a noise in the upper part of the lower unit. Does anyone have an idea what the problem might be. Thank you!

Re: My prop is slipping

Sounds like your prop has a spun hub. You can verify this by marking a straight line on the center hub across to the prop. Take it for a brief spin, and if the lines don't meet anymore you've found your problem.

This is an easy repair, by any local prop repair shop.

I have the same motor as yours :)

Re: My prop is slipping

Thank you so much!!!!

I was not sure what the hub was but I removed the nut and put hash marks on the front of the prop. Once I checked it after running the marks were not lined up. I put it in gear and turned the prop and the middle portion that has the groves for the shaft came all the way out. I hope this is what you were talking about.

I can't afford a new prop right now. Do you know how much this will cost to repair or can I do it myself? Thanks again.

Probably around $75.00 and it takes special equipment to do. Not for the do-it-yourselfer..

If I were to get a new prop does anyone know what size I need. The only numbers on the side are "15P A3".

Re: My prop is slipping

Waldo, You can look up your motor in the prop selection (Mercury, Michigan Wheel and others) and choose a prop based upon the pitch. You currently have a 15" Pitch prop. If it allows the motor to get to ~5800 RPM, it is the correct one. If not, you need to choose a prop with reduced or added pitch to "dial in the motor"

Re: My prop is slipping

OK, thanks for all the help so far. I took the prop down to the local marine shop and also took my boat. They did say that my prop need to be rebuilt but when they checked out my motor and saw what it was doing, they said I had a problem with my lower unit and they would have to take it off to see what was exactly wrong with it and I didn't have the money at the time.

I feel so lucky though. A friend of mine from church remembered doing some work for a woman whose husband past away and was selling his old boat and thought the motor might be the same as mine. IT WAS,,,a 1971 1150 w/ elec trim. He was trying to rebuild it and also bought another motor to use for parts. The best thing is that he just replaced the lower unit and prop. I hope I'm not being to wordy but I am excited.

Anyways, let me get to the point. How hard is it to replace the lower unit.

Not a problem, but you need to obey the rules. Either look up how to do it up on here, get a manual, or get a friend to tell you.

Pay particular attention to things that don't want to budge; like on the lower unit, there is a bolt under the trim tab...gotta remove the tab to see it...don't forget which way it's pointing so you can put it back there when finished.

Other thing is insure that the water pipe (coming down from the mid section) is stabbed into the water pump hole and has a rubber gasket around it.

HTH,

Mark

Re: My prop is slipping

OK, I got the new lower unit on but it will not seat all the way. There is about a 3/4" gap.

Does anyone know how I can tell what year the motor is? The ser# is 4116504.

Also, the motor I just got has a Hydrolic power trim. I can here the motor working but it does not go up or down. Is it worth trying to put on my boat? Again thanks so much for all the help so far.

1975

The '72 and the '75 1150 use a different mid-section mounting configuration from the powerhead's perspective. I am not sure if you can bolt on a newer (1975) lower unit or not. Maybe.

The power trim system should fit.

All the bolts line up and I measured everything to ensure it was all in the same place. I read another post on here before where some else had a simular problem, but I cant find it again. Thank you though.

I had a problem like this with my V6. In my case, it turned out that the water tube had the rubber hose insert from the old pump cover still stuck on the end of the water pipe. It was stopping the LU from seating all the way.

Re: My prop is slipping

waldosx5, I just had the exact same problem putting my Lower Unit back on this week. After you check what MrBigStuff suggested, it may just be that you have to get the drive shaft lined up perfectly in order for it to slide the rest of the way. The 3/4" that you mention is exactly where I was stuck.

After I made sure the shift shaft and the water tube were lining up for sure, I found a longer bolt to hold the Lower Unit in place, just to keep it from falling on the floor while I let go of it. Then I turned the flywheel clockwise about 1/8 of an inch and tried to push the LU in. Turned it another 1/8 and tried again. After about ten tries, it slid right in. If you have an assitant to turn the flywheel (slowly) it may be quicker.

Good luck,
CG

Re: My prop is slipping

Wait a second .. you said you can turn it both ways in Neutral. Then in gear, you can spin it only one way, and it goes "clack, clack, clack". The other way offers resistance.

If you put it into reverse, can you then only spin the prop the OTHER way with the "clack, clack, clack"

I don't think that's a problem with the LU....

If so then I have LU problems, on my 68. I think it's designed to do that....

Re: My prop is slipping

OK, It has been a while since I got my lower unit on my boat and thanks for everyones help. I have had so much going on and my daughter has been in and out of the hospital that I have not been able to finish fixing my motor.
As I said before the lower unit went on fine. My problem now is it will only go in foward. I start the motor in N and the prop goes foward, I put it in F and the prop goes foward, I put it in R and still foward. When I put the lower unit it on both the motor and lower unit were in F. I can't get the lower unit in N or R. If anyone knows anything about this please send me your wisdom.

This post was from June of 2006. I would hope the problem has been resolved.
