Re: my rectifier

Follow the two yellow wires from your stator. They will terminate on the rectifier or rectifier/regulator depending on the motor. How's the charge? Should be 14-14.5V.

Having said all that, since the tach senses the AC from the stator, I doubt if your problem is the rectifier.

Jerry

Re: my rectifier

He is right about the tach sensing A/C. It's the rectifier's task to cinvert A/C to D/C. If it is passing A/C, it is definitely defective.
A low reading on the tach vcould also be low output from the stator itself. But the voltage test that Jerry stated, should bear that out.

Some rectifiers also include the regulator, which regulates the voltage the electricals are subjected to. Sometimes, they are in the same package as the rectifier, sometimes there IS no regulator.

Re: my rectifier

Got quick question about rectifiers while we're at it. on my 1974 Evinrude V4, the rectifier is converting AC to DC for both the electrical system and ignition system? is the power pack receiving DC voltage from the rectifier also thus the coils too? sorry to ask a question within a thread.

Jeep. yes. The rectifier converts A/C to D/C wherever it is used. The coils indirectly, because they receive thier pulse from the CD unit.
CD being capacitive discharge, just as in a camera's flash bulb, or a strobe light.

Re: my rectifier

12footer,
thanks for your input. I always thought the rectifier has nothing to do with the ignition system, only the charging system.

power pack is really just a bunch of capacitors epoxied into a little box to send juice to the various components.

appreciate your input.
