My starving Johnson ?

I have a 1974 Johnson 25 HP outboard. I went fishing last night and on my way up river it was fine (15 mins). On my way home after fishing, I went upstream about 2 mins and the motor started to rev down. It sounded like it was starving for fuel so I pumped the bulb on the fuel tank and it reved back up to running RPMs. It would go for 20-30 seconds and then it would start to sound like it was close to stalling again. I was able to get someone to pump the bulb while I drove and we got the ten minutes back to the boat launch.

What could this be? Fuel pump? plugged line? What? This is the wrong time of year for this to happen. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks
Pat

Well, most likely if you can pump it and make it run, it is either an air leak or fuel pump.

Re: My starving Johnson ?

JB, I found your reply to someone a while back about symptoms of a bad Fuel pump.

---------------------------------------------
1. Engine dies about 30 seconds after start.
2. Engine will run if you keep pumping the primer bulb.
3. Engine runs okay at low to medium speed, surges at high speed.

Good luck.
-----------------------------------------------
I think that sounds exactly like it. Could it possibly be the tank ? How difficult is it to replace or rebuild a fuel pump on a 1974 Johnson 25 HP ? I have looked on Iboats and on other sites and haven't found a kit or a pump for this motor. Where can one be found.

Thanks again
Pat

P.S. Did I post this somewhere other than Johnson Troubles ? Sorry if I did. I did post it twice accidently (won't happen again :)
