Well my wife's 4Runner had a rear differential leak. I did some investigating and the pumpkin has rusted through. A call to my former Toyota dealer and the parts guy tipped me off :) Thank you Glen!!

It seems as if this is becoming a common occurrence in 2000 vehicles and older to include Tacoma's.

The solution is to cut the old pumpkin off and weld on a pumpkin cover from a land rover. So common that the Toyota dealer had one in stock!

So I slapped a temporary band aid on the differential of some epoxy and sealed the two holes. Wow the metal is rusted thin...... thank you New England roads and salt in the winter!

Next weekend I will tackle the cut and weld with a friend who has already done one.

I guess I should keep quiet about this or knowing this state they will make me change the registration!! :p

When I was a road commissioner...... our Mack trucks had oil pans that would rust through in 2 years...... gotta love the salt

Under body/suspension components rusting out is NOT necessarily a product issue.

States are so afraid of lawsuits that they are dumping some very serious, read; corrosive, materials on the roads to melt ice.

We pay and pay.:(

I'm glad I live in AZ. We just shovel "sunshine".:D

To Bob and anybody else that reads this...

After dealing with a rotted out pan myself 5 or 6 years ago, I started getting the bright idea to hose the pan and tranny pan down with Merc's corrosion guard every oil change.

Works great, none of the cars even the oldest, show any signs of rust on the pans at all.

that is pathetic. even the old eastern fender flappers of the 40's, 50's and 60's did not suffer this malady!
