Well, my IMPENDING trip to Amsterdam. I'm kinda hoping , in this vast collection of really cool boaters, that some one has embarked on this type of vacation before. I just wanted to know if there were any "never do this" or "never go there" type of advice that I should be aware of.
Any advice on flight/hotel packages?
I'm totally green on this so any and all advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance,

Dave

Re: My trip to Amsterdam...

I'll be there in the beginning of December, for a combined work/fun visit trying to rediscover my old haunts.
The only and most important piece of advice I can give is: relax and let flow over you.(or through you).

There in my early 20s in the 90s, spend at least one day on the canals.

A word of warning. It is said that certain drugs are legal there which is not true. Those drugs can be purchased in certain establishments and used in those establishments and the police will not hassle the patrons of those establishments however they are illegal. One of these establishments was the Hard Rock Cafe in Amsterdam. I think this is done to help promote tourism. If you stay in a hotel with a safe keep most of your money and credit cards in those safes. Amsterdam can be a fun place however it being a major water port it can be a dangerous place as well. Stay in the lighted areas at night and also stay around people. If you are planning on spending a lot of time there I would recommend getting out of the city and maybe seeing Luxembourg or Belgium.

Don't go it aint as nice as shown in the tourist brosures its just crowed.

If you want to go to holland you better land at Rotterdam airport (2nd largest airport)
than visit the citty (it has not a lot of old buildings becouse it has been bommed in the 2nd WW )

Can get weed there to if you want its
And the city is less crowded.

Re: My trip to Amsterdam...

good times. good place to see tons of americans too but fun none the less.

all hotel rooms over there are small and kind of dungeon-like so don't expect too much. lots share bathrooms with the whole floor or some other arrangement. i can't remember where i stayed, there are countless small hotels but stick closer to center of city because you'll be walking...alot.

there isn't much to be warned of, its generally a very friendy place but even that can attract crooks. museums and stuff are outstanding.

Re: My trip to Amsterdam...

Dude,
I just made the Amsterdam trip last December. Shoot me an E Mail and I will be happy to discuss the trip with you. Dont let the trip intimidate you. The city is very easy to navigate, and very safe as well........IF you use your head. Just a thought. If you have a choice, be sure to stay downtown. You will spend a little more money, but it is well worth it.

Re: My trip to Amsterdam...

Thanks for all the insight guys.
TD I'll shoot yuou an e-mail when I come up with some more questions, I don't want to waste your time with chit chat.
Salty, I see the small accomodations on some sites on the net....hopefully we're renting a houseboat in the city on a canal. Don't care about taking it anywhere....just looks like a cool place to stay.
I'm ingesting ALL this advice....If anyone thinks of anything I might miss or absolutely HAVE to see, please let me know. I'm looking forward to the Van Gogh museum. (among other things) ;)

Re: My trip to Amsterdam...

a houseboat would be very cool.

when are you going? the 'cup' is about this time of year or was when i went which was right after thanksgiving several years ago. there were alot of parties and bands for that in addition to the coffee shop hopping. i'm sure there's always something going on though.

edit- i did think of 1 thing to avoid, the space cake. it's pretty much just dessert for the tourists from what i've been told.

Re: My trip to Amsterdam...

Dave,
Have you actually looked into a houseboat in Amsterdam? It is not quite what you would think. Even if you WANTED to take the boat out for a tour, you would not be able to move it. The old boats line every canal like New York taxi cabs, and most have not been moved in many, many years. Fact is, the only boats you will see moving are the long tour boats which are made to navigate the narrow canals in the city. However, some are available for rent, but be prepared to pay out the nose in Euros for the floating dump. In fact, Amsterdam will no longer allow additional houseboats in the canals due to overcrowding, and the houseboats cost several hundred thousand Euros each. I was truly amazed by that fact.

Be sure to have some deep pockets when you go over. The American dollar is only worth about .70 cents over there, and dude, everything is so expensive when you get there. Don't bother to rent a car when you get there, for there is nowhere to park in the city. Take the public transit instead. It is very easy to use. In fact, the city can be easily navigated by foot anyway. Purchase one of those "tourist maps" of Amsterdam at your local bookstore, and it will be more than helpful when navigating the city by foot.
