Mystery drive shaft o-ring

This question is for a 9822E 1968 9.5 Sportwin.

Had a little leakage in the lower unit, so I went and replaced the seals and while I was there put in a new impeller. Good thing too because I had cuts in two of the arms.

Anyway, I'm a little confused by the manual. The last step of the instructions for Reassembly of the Gearcase says "Install a new o-ring to the top of the driveshaft". Okay, fine. Only I can't find a part number, nor is it listed in any part diagram I have. Is this a manual guffaw, or is there really a mystery o-ring at the top of the drive shaft? I'm ready to call in Paul Drake, I'm sure he can get to the bottom of all this.

The splines on top of the drive shaft, where it mates with the powerhead...it's a place for an o-ring just at the bottom of that. You have to be wearing 3-D glasses in order to see it...

I saw where it goes on the real-live shaft, just couldn't find it in any parts diagrams.

Yeah, that's about where I found half of it. Looking at the diagram, now I see it in a group of three parts off in the middle of nowhere. I never would have correlated those to the drive shaft on my own.

You can get a replacement oring at any hardware store. It's just an oring; nothing special about it.

Napa had one that fit nicely. Thanks.
