Mystery leak in lower / Availibility of aftermarket reservoir

My '92 5.0 Alpha evidently leaked lube and locked up & stripped gears (Grrrrrrr) I had a certified Merc mechanic replace the gears, ect.

The next season the lower was fill with fresh lube. After about 4 hrs use.. it was next to empty! The mechanic did a pressure test and found no leaks?? Where is the most common leaks on these?

I'd like to install an AFTERMARKET gear oil reservoir kit (1/4 the price!). Does anyone have a source? The only place I found is sold out.

He pressure tested it before you used it or after you noticed the oil missing???

After.. I don't know if he pulled the lower off. I suspect he did not, would that matter?
