Mystery residue

I was installing a new pump kit on my motor and found a white powdery/granular residue packed into the
area circled in red. It was packed solid.
This was my first pump install so i wasn't sure if this is normal or not.
Anyone else seen this before? Was it just sand? It wasn't salty.
Thanks,

Dave

Re: Mystery residue

Calcium, salt, sand, whatever evaporated left that there. Carefully scrape it out and move on.

Now what you see there is also accumulated in your block. The outer water jackets have it, the cooling passages inside the block have it too....... and it is probably built up near the water deflectors too.

That's the reason I bite the bullet on my V-4 and do the head gaskets, thermostats, water deflectors ....... the full gambit about every 3-5 years and never had an overheat problem.

Re: Mystery residue

Thanks Bob,
It's funny you should mention all that you did. It's exactly what I had planned to do. Water pump, then clean passages install new deflectors, head gaskets, t-stats, etc....
We DID have a overheat issue a couple weeks ago, but I chalked it up to a LOT of floating grass as half a dozen boats around us over the weekend while scalloping in Homasassa had the same overheat issue. Everyone was stopping and hitting reverse for a second to clear the grass off of the gearcase.
Thanks again.

Just remember where you live and boat. It's all normal.
