Nada price guides?

I recently purchased a 1993 Thompson Calae 17.5ft open bow with a merc outdrive and a 3.0 I4 for $3700 the boat is in pretty good shape good interior (some small stains but no rips or tears) and the engine runs great I put a new pioneer soundsystem in too. I had to fix a small rotted spot at the tip of the bow but other than that the floor was solid the hull is shiny and undamaged and i have already had it out several times this year and had tons of fun so far no problems whatsoever. Yesterday i went onto the Nada boat site and looked it up and it said my boats average retail price was $1400 I was shocked how could this perfectly working nice looking boat only be worth $1400 that seems crazy to me when you can barely get a new paddleboat for that price. Are these prices correct? Did I just overpay over $2000 for my boat?

Re: Nada price guides?

That's the problem with "Price Guides" -- they are just that -- not absolute values. Area of the country, popularity, market conditions, whether the manufacturer is still in business or not, age and a host of other factors affect the "actual" price of anything. An old Corvette and old Corvair are both cars but popularity is just one factor that greatly affects value. If you were happy with the price up until you saw the NADA Guide then why are you letting a useless book upset you. If you looked up the price of a very nice 10 year old car in the NADA book you would have to weigh what NADA thinks the AVERAGE 10 year old car is worth vs what this very nice 10 year old car is worth. Value, like beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Did you pay too much for the boat? I don't know as I can't see it but it doesn't matter what I think -- it's your money.

chaz; silvertip covered your question pretty well.

i would add one thing. any boats i have looked at that were Nada price or lower weren't in the condition i would be comfortable with. good clean boats are hard to find and when you do they are going to be priced accordingly

You probably verified this, but make sure that the NADA guide included the price of the boat AND motor.

Don't forget the cost of the trailer as well.

Enjoy the boat--buyer's remorse is not allowed in boating! An item's "worth" is determined by what someone will pay for it. You just paid for it, so that's what it's worth to you!:)

Those NADA guides are way too subjective anyways. They don't consider A LOT of factors when "pricing" the boat, so no worries.

Bottom line NADA is useless....
It shows my Chris Craft being worth 1100.....lol!
They don't take into consideration that mine has been completely restored,
new transom, all new seats,electronics,ect..not to mention the engine work and rebuilt trailer..
I would have to get 5k for it if i decided to sell.

Don't worry about NADA....The actual condition of the boat dictates the price..
