Not very. You will want to corroborate the nada value along with some other reference points, like asking prices for same/similar boats and other market value sources, like BUCvalue.

Sometimes NADA can be accurate and other times it can be way off . . . You just never know.

Way up north in the midwest in walleye and musky country it seems NADA isn't close. At least for your typical 16-18' fishing rig..... Basically, boats in good condition go for more than valued.....

In Southern CA, boats can be below NADA. Depends on where you live and what type boat. The Wellcraft in my signature had a NADA of $28K when I bought it back in 2002 and I bought it for $21K with only 70 hours on it.

The pontoon boat in my sig, I purchased it just below NADA. It was very good condition and also 70 hours for a 7 year old boat.

We just sold a boat - traded it in. They offered me NADA book value. After seeing it they upped the trade-in price to 25% above book. It's now on their lot at 32% above retail book. This was a pristine example that didn't have a single scratch on the hull or defect in the upholstery.

Based on observations of other used boats on local dealer's yards that had normal wear and tear I would say that the NADA values are spot on. Upstate NY state - all fresh water usage.

I found my NADA data versus other sources, so here goes. . .

Current value on my boat per the following sources.

NADA = $25,000
BUC=$33,750
Current asking prices for same/similar boats = $30-40K

So what would be the value of my boat???? :noidea:

Keep in mind that NADA is merely a depreciation curve with some market input.

Last year the NADA value on my boat actually went up by about $1K. Sources like BUC have more market input, the value according to BUC went up by $2500 in 2013. Both of these adjustments were probably in response for the improving market conditions in recent years.

FWIW I have never paid anywhere near NADA value for anything but can't ever remember selling anything at or below NADA...

The point.... NADA is intended to be average....I am WAY better than average at finding a deal and maybe just a little above average at getting a good price when selling...

Of course most of the things I have are in above average condition when I sell them and not always but sometimes need work when I buy them.

A couple years ago I sold a 4x4 atv for over double it's book value but while it had a couple dings, mechanically it was better than new...

boats can be the same way.... Two identical boats that book for $8k .... One w nothing special, poorly maintained, and ratty might be worth $4k while the other w great electronics, various upgrades, garage kept, and meticulously maintained might be worth $12k

As with most things there is no black or white answers to your question. For some boats it is dead on, some way off. More info would help us answer you question better.
