I have heard most seamen are supersticious.

I have also heard that if you buy a boat and want to change the name of the boat that there are certain rituals or prayers you say for good luck. I'm not sure if it's luck, karma or mojo... Do you guys believe this and have you done it with your vessels?

I don't know if it is a silly superstition or not, but when something goes wrong, (note I said when and not if), if you did not perform the ritual I guarantee you will wish to yourself that you had.

Ok, slow down, this is important stuff..You MUST have an un-naming ceremony prior to re-naming your boat,if not expect all sorts of calamity to rein down on you and your boat.
The ceremony can be as simple as downing some Beer ,has to be nautical beer ( Anchor Steam ) or Rum, definitely Rum. then make up some sort of nautical sounding tribute to the previous name, then ask Neptune to take the former name, Drink some more Rum....Ok,More.....Now ask Neptune to accept your new name and bless your craft....Now finish Rum.
Although this seems silly...Dont do it and see what happens, remember the Exxon Valdez??? used to be called the Exxon Remerez, didn't have the ceremony..........

I seem to remember the cause of the Exxon Valdez accident had more to do with too much rum during the skippering than not enough rum during the renaming :D

I don't know, but after I stopped calling my boat Piece-O-Junk, it seemed to float higher and run faster. Call me superstitious, but...:D

Well if the ceremony goes awry and you get stuck with the name you could allways dock with the swingers (I assume) on our river and hang with the likes of: X-Ta-Sea, Wet Nipples, Fanta-Sea, Exotic Pleasures, Dripping Wet, and Play Thing..

i heard you always have to keep the old name on the boat... rename the boat on the outter hull, but you have to physically write the old name on the boat somewhere, it can be hidden, but it has to be on the boat somewhere.

EXCELLENT.. I happen to like RUM! I forgot to mention that the old name is the Rondovous... named after the previous owner. Good name but doesn't work for us... our new name will be the Check Your Fly II... here's the logo I designed.

I think you all are right - the ritual wins... I vote yo ho ho for the good mojo and a bottle of rum...

Re: Name change... good mojo or bunk?

:( Yikes! My boat came with a name on it, "Jay Bird" that I took off within 5 minutes of bringing it home 7 months ago. I also seen the old name painted over on the transom "Sloppy Seconds". I have since color sanded that off and do not have the new name on yet. I wonder if a ceremony was performed when the first name was removed? Well, the previous owner is dead, and this boat has been fighting me all throughout the rebuild. I wonder if I have to do 2 different ceremonies or can combine them? Sounds like a lot of rum (not that that matters... but still!)

I just happen to have a new bottle of Bacardi Razz just waiting for this! :D

I just finished my list of 50 new names and am getting ready to go out for several cases of beer and rum.:D

Wow, this is interesting, I guess maybe this is the reason my transom rotted out:D I forgot to take the boat to the water for the ceremony. I did however in true naval fashion bust a rather good bottle of champagne on the bow. I think I might have been lucky since when I got my boat she had no name anywhere, I commissioned her as "Wet Dreams":D seems to fit. Always had dreams of owning a boat and of course the water is wet:D, Since I am in the middle of a restore I will definitely be following the advice from the link that TD gave us.

forgot to ask one question, the article refers to the sea, I boat in fresh water only, will the Gods hear me, being that I am roughly 100 miles from the open ocean?
