Just brought in a 1976 BAM, Browning 18 ft with a murc IO 888.
Everyone I have talked to sais it has a ford 302, but when I try to buy parts at the parts store they say it does not have points in a 1976 ford?
The coil blew up and The one that the boat shop said goes on that motor will not fit into the sleeve that the old one came out of?
Any Ideas on how to tell what the motor is? All it says on the valve cover is 188 HP.

You have an 888 Mercruiser with188 hp, using a Ford 302 Long Block. Try buying points for Mercruiser 888, and you will have a lot better chance of finding them. The ignition system is NOT the same as automotive, neither is the fuel system, starter or alternator.
Not sure what sleeve you are talking about for the coil, but try removing the bracket from the engine and loosening the long screw and see if it fits.

I'm sure the sleeve he is talking about is the metal clamp that holds the coil on the 888/233. It bolts to the top of the intake manifold. Any standard marine coil should bolt up just fine, you may have to loosen the bracket "sleeve" up all the way. Engine is a Ford 302.
