I'm redoing all the wiring and building a new dash. The large gauge Orange wire has never been hooked up. It goes into the large connector near the engine and doesn't come out. Any ideas?

That would have been used if your instrument panel had a amp meter . That wire was eliminated later on . Volt meters are a lot simpler.

Its getting all new gauges. The new one is a volt meter, I would have never guessed an amp meter. Thanks.

simply look up SAE standard wire colors. the wire color coding has been a standard for about 60 years

My vote is the oil pressure sender.

You may have to do what i did with my old boat - completely re-wire it. And get rid of those butt connectors.

Definetly isn't the oil pressure sender. I found that. The orange wire is a thicker diameter. When traced, it comes back to the red/white wire on the alternator. But it also has continuity at the starter.

My other thought would be the starting system. I have a 5.7L system now, but I remember back when I had the ol 4 cylinder 470, there was an orange thick 4-6 gauge wire in the starting or solenoid path. This was a while back though....
