Below is a picture of my outdrive. It's from an '81 Searay with a 3.7L 470.

Can anyone name it? Is it a Mercruiser I? I am looking for a transom seal kit and I'm not sure what to get. Either a Sierra Part 18-2601 or 18-8205.

18-2601, indicates that it is for Mercruiser R, MR, ALPHA 1 (1983-90) S/N 6225577 & UP, ALPHA 1 SS (1986-89) S/N OA545004 & UP.

The kit 18-8205 is for Mercruiser I, R, MR, and Alpha I with exhaust tube. Would this be the right one?

Do I have an exhaust tube or not is what I've narrowed it down to. The boat is far away or I'd just look at it.

Thanks Everyone!

Thanks Don, much appreciated. I ordered the proper re seal kit. I like George. My entire boat needs a name, and I think George is just right.

i'm gonna speculate that the lower has been replaced with newer style alpha1 version. the back of the antiventilation plate looks squared off to me. i believe it'd be rounded if it was original model 1 lower. http://www.mercstuff.com/drive_idprealpha.htm

just a guess....

OK, so it's George the cross dresser

Anyway, it doesn't matter one bit for the type transom shield kit he gets. That's all still one drove. ;)

....Do I have an exhaust tube or not is what I've narrowed it down to....

470s never had an exhaust tube, they had a bellows. Only V8s of a certain era had tubes.

And I'm with everybody else here.... That drive is a '1' drive (also called an 'MC-1'), and definitely not an Alpha 1. And Ziggy's good eye picked the later style lower unit. When you pull the lower off to service the water pump, you'll be able to determine which later unit it is. But even that doesn't make any difference to you unless you want to get inside the unit (DEEP inside).

What transom seal kit should I get? I thought it had a bellows last time I looked at it. So no exhaust tube?

Re: Name this Outdrive

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you need kit # 18-2601. It contains an exhaust bellows.

HERE is the page I'm looking at....

I stand corrected, I didn't see the ribs on the upper. The are pretty blurry in that picture. I'm a little embarrassed to have given misinformation. Sorry!!

Hi.

From what i can tell the drive in the photo provided is a Mercruiser type-r.

The Alpha branding hadnt been bought into play yet as Merc hadnt developed the Bravo drive.

Tell tale signs, flat cav plate, lifting eye and design.

I could be wrong but im 80% certain.

Damien.
