I've had good experience with NAPA concerning auto parts as well as marine. Some NAPA stores also have a paint dept. that can custom mix you up a can of paint, even a 12 oz can of aerosol paint.

Carquest can get the same stuff as NAPA, usually. I like Carquest in this town over NAPA, but we don't have a normal NAPA here. I personally think they sent all their stupid employees to this store  Plus Carquest usually can get the parts faster from the wharehouse then NAPA, but that depends on where your at. Normally NAPA is pretty good at getting parts.

Napa carries marine parts here as well, although some of those stupid ( at least slow ) workers must be on loan to our store.

Re: NAPA auto?

NAPA has had a 600 page marine parts catalog for years. It does seem that the small possably dry branches may not know of this manual My limited experience in central NY is they sometimes have to order the part but usually an overnight supply. Also here if you ask for the catalog they will order it and give it to you and I'm not a steady customer.

Re: NAPA auto?

Well, since this old thread seems to have been resurrected and I always want to offer whatever info I can to those in search of items for their motors, yes, NAPA does sell outboard motor parts, especially for older OMC engines. My experience has been that the local stores don't stock much, but the regional warehouses will often have some of the more frequently requested items. If you are lucky enough (as I am) to live close to one of those warehouses, you can buy as a retail walk-in customer.

I too, have been informed by NAPA people that the stuff they sell is from Sierra. I recently did some comparison shopping on "Type C" gear oils and found that NAPA sells the Sierra brand at a price that is less expensive than some other places, including iboats. There is, however, a mitigating factor - for the price at NAPA, you have to buy an entire case (12) of one quart bottles of the stuff. They do not sell it by the quart. So, even though iboats' per quart price is a bit higher, its a better deal for those who only need a quart or two.

I guess the moral to the story, is that you have to shop around.

Hey, you guys, you are on a free forum sponsored by iboats. Iboats sells Sierra. They have competitive prices and use some of the profit to sponsor this stuff you are reading. Need I say more???

Yes, please elaborate a bit and continue to rail against those of us that do comparison shopping from various vendors, iBoats, local included.

Honestly, some of the stances some take here defending iBoats as a single shopping source when talking about any other source of parts is just getting silly. If some here had their way, iBoats would be the only source of parts, considering their words they post. So, when is iBoats coming over to my house to service my outboard? They won't and I will continue to support what ever parts source(s) I choose to frequent, iBoats, my local repair/parts place, NAPA, etc.

Re: NAPA auto?

FR has a very valid point, it is like listening to NPR, it is free but they are listener funded,if everyone took the stance that they weren't going to send it money, no more NPR, same with iboats.

His point is the iboats store funds this site so if you like this site maybe throw a little buisness here to continue this fabulous site, I get parts here when I can but not all the time, I have used Napa when I needed a part right now but when I got my Minn Kota deckhand I came here, ya I probably could have saved $2.50 going somewhere else but I chose to support the site.

OK, you asked me to elaborate, so I feel free to do so now. Note that the people at iboats have enough class that they didn't say what I said (I'm not connected to iboats in any way). But I say to you, would you take your own food into a restaurant, just so you could enjoy the atmosphere? You are getting free advice here from pros and amatures alike. Sort out what you like, but don't send the customers someplace else.

Re: NAPA auto?

My suggestion is that we not make this a bigger deal than it really is.

I recommend iboats to folks as much as I can. I also recommend other sources, because iboats doesn't have every single thing that people might need. Folks also have to deal with financial realities, sometimes.

In my post, I mentioned that NAPA sells Sierra Type C gear oil at a "per unit" price that is less than iboats, but I also pointed out that you have to buy a whole case at NAPA to get that per unit price. I further pointed out that getting outboard items from NAPA is not always as easy as walking into the local retail location and "snapping up" what you need. In many cases, you have to order the item and it might be just as easy and cost effective, to make that order with iboats, instead.

I don't think that many of the folks with newer outboards are going to be buying stuff from NAPA. Its mostly the guys like me, who own nothing but 40+ year old motors. We, by necessity, have to buy stuff where we can find it and we look out for each other. We figure out "who has what" and we share the information. There is no harm in that and the day that we feel we need to censor information here, is the day that the site ceases to be truly useful.

I would also like to give iboats more credit for this than is implied in this concern. I believe that the company understands all of what I have just said. I think they are totally justified in not wanting people with a financial or other inappropriate interest in a competitor, trying to spam the site, but that's not what is going on here.

Anyway, I took a photo of a box in which I received an item from iboats, to use as an avatar. I did that for a reason - first that iboats provided something that I needed quickly and at an attractive price and second, because I want to remind people that there is a store attached to this forum. As pointed out in my "signature," I have no official or financial tie to iboats either, but I'm happy to promote them in any way that I can.
